Stylish Potrero Hill trilevel
Renovated home uses unconventional materials
Unconventional materials paired with careful planning results in a stylish four-bedroom on Potrero Hill.
The facade of 1330 20th St. is clad in the same material used to cover skateboarding ramps, its staircase is made of butcher blocks and a handcrafted steel screen serves as an awning that disperses light throughout the top-floor penthouse. A reverse floor plan, south-facing terrace and a sloping garden highlight the trilevel.
“They created a home that is as clever function-wise as it is aesthetically gorgeous,” said Payton Stiewe of Pacific Union Real Estate, who is listing the residence for $1.995 million.
Grygoriy Ladigin and Casper Mork Ulnes of Mork Ulnes Architects collaborated on the 2011 redesign that saw the installation of recessed window shades, integrated speakers and seismic retrofit.
Jenn-Air appliances dominate a kitchen that includes an LG dishwasher and Bluestar five-burner gas range. Caesarstone counters and pendant lights outfit the open kitchen that rests beneath a skylight. Built-in speakers add to the great room’s entertainment element, and the space opens out to a southern patio through a collapsible glass wall. The patio offers more than 300 square feet of living space and overlooks the rolling hills.
A perforated steel sunscreen hangs over part of the deck. This retractable curtain can be lowered to shade the great room. The varying size of the circular cutouts in the steel helps scatter sunlight about the penthouse. Berkeley metal artist Henry Defauw crafted the awning/sunscreen that stretches 20 feet wide and 11 feet high.
The northern end of the great room leads to a steel catwalk that links with the upper level of the terraced backyard that features drought-beating faux grass. The multilevel backyard also includes a mature Meyer lemon tree and irrigation system.
Beneath a skylight rests a staircase made of butcher blocks that were glued together and bolted into position.
All four bedrooms are on the middle level, and each includes a closet with custom built-ins. The owner’s suite is tucked in the northeastern corner of the house and opens to a garden and patio through a sliding glass door. A Victoria and Albert deep soaking tub highlights a spa bathroom that includes dual vanities, a heated towel rack, and a stall shower with dual shower heads.
