Broncos to trade Talib to Rams

-

The Denver Broncos agreed to trade cornerback Aqib Talib to the Los Angeles Rams, a person with knowledge of the deal told the Associated Press.

The Rams will send Denver a mid-round pick, believed to be a fifth-rounder, in next month’s draft for the perennial Pro Bowler. The trade won’t be official until the start of the new league year Wednesday.

“Man, I’m so excited,” Talib said from Dallas. “I can’t wait to play for coach Sean McVay, go back with working with Wade (Phillips), and playing with my young man Marcus Peters.”

Phillips was the Denver defensive coordinator in 2015 and 2016. Kansas City is trading Peters to the Rams.

The Tennessee Titans said they plan to release running back DeMarco Murray, who ran for an AFC-leading 1,287 yards and nine touchdowns to make the Pro Bowl in 2016, his first year with the Titans. He ran for 659 yards and six touchdowns last season. Murray, 30, was due to make a $6.25 million base salary in 2018.

Former Raiders punter Shane Lechler, 42, signed a contract extension with the Houston Texans. An 18-year veteran, Lechler led the NFL last season in punting yards, finished second in both net punting yards and punting average, and tied for third in total punts.

Golf: Tiger Woods found out how tough Innisbrook can be in a swirling wind, and he was among only about 20 percent of the field who broke par Thursday in the Valspar Championship at Palm Harbor, Fla.

Canadian rookie Corey Conners didn’t make a bogey until his final hole at No. 9 for a 4under 67 and a one-shot lead.

Woods made five birdies and shot 70. It was his first time breaking par in the opening round of a PGA Tour event since the 2015 Wyndham Championship — just six tournaments ago because of back surgeries.

“I enjoy it when par is a good score,” he said. “It’s a reward.”

Pablo Larrazabal needed a wake-up call 38 minutes before his tee time when his alarm didn’t work, and he made nine birdies to shoot 5-under 67 at the European Tour’s Indian Open in New Delhi. Larrazabal was tied for second place, two shots behind leader Emiliano Grillo.

College baseball: No. 4 Stanford rallied after falling behind 4-0, but No. 17 Texas scored three in the seventh and prevailed 8-6 to open of a fourgame series in Austin, Texas.
