A hit-and-run accident Wednesday afternoon in Vallejo killed an 18-yearold woman, the city’s seventh person to die in a fatal collision in 2018, authorities said.

The driver of a 1994 Chevrolet Suburban was going northbound on Vervais Avenue about 3:40 p.m. when the vehicle started to roll backward for unknown reasons, the Vallejo Police Department said.

The SUV then backed onto a sidewalk near the intersection of Vervais Avenue and Fleming Avenue East, where it struck a pedestrian, police said.

The Solano County coroner identified the woman as Ayres Buffin, of Vallejo.

When officers arrived on the scene they found the abandoned vehicle and Buffin suffering from severe injuries.

She was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot, authorities said.

Police on Thursday identified 30-year-old Vincent Fitzer as a person who may have been driving the vehicle.

In January, police acknowledged a spike in fatal crashes after four people died in just 29 days.

Two more people died Feb. 28 in what authorities suspect was an accident involving alcohol.

No arrests were made in Wednesday’s incident and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident or the whereabouts of Fitzer can contact Officer Waylon Boyce of the Vallejo Police Department Traffic Division at (707) 648-4013.
