Oakland police shot and killed a man armed with a semiautomatic weapon Sunday evening a half-mile from the MacArthur BART Station, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched about 6:15 p.m. to the 900 block of 40th Street, where a man was reportedly armed, according to the Oakland Police Department.

Officers spotted the man and ordered him to drop the weapon, police said.

“He has a semiautomatic in his right hand,” an officer said in radio communications.

When the suspect did not comply with commands, police said, officers fired their weapons.

The suspect, who was not identified, died from at least one gunshot wound. A handgun was recovered at the scene, police said, but no other details are known about the weapon.

California prohibits the sale of dozens of specific semiautomatic and automatic models, and in an effort to stop gunmakers from circumventing the law, legislators have prohibited certain characteristics of weapons as well.

The officers involved in the shooting were not identified.

The Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division and Internal Affairs, as well as the Alameda County district attorney’s office, are investigating the shooting.
