Chung Lim Gee
April 20, 1934 - March 7, 2018
Mr. Gee was born in Toisan, Guangzhou, China to Henry Gee and Fong Tse.
Mr. Gee arrived in the United States on March 8, 1951, settling in Mason City, Iowa. After working for two years with his father, Mr. Gee established his first restaurant, The Bamboo Inn, in Iowa City, Iowa.
Mr. Gee was introduced to his future wife, Yuet Ying Yee, and they were married on November 22, 1960 in Iowa City.
They relocated to Waterloo, Iowa and opened another restaurant called the Mandarin Café. They raised their four children there.
In 1974, Mr. Gee purchased the Lorraine Hotel in San Francisco. They moved to SF in 1975 and opened a restaurant named Dick & Lim’s and a sewing factory. They also invested in real estate properties.
In 1983, Mr. Gee purchased a restaurant in Dubuque, Iowa called the Monte Carlo. In 1998, they retired and returned to San Francisco.
During Mr. Gee’s retirement years, he became more active in the Gee Poy Kuo Association, Fung Toy Alumni Association, and Hoy Sun Ning Yung Benevolent Association.
Mr. Gee was preceded in death by his son, Leo V Gee, and his wife of over 45 years.
Mr. Gee is survived by his children, Lisa and Patrick Yu, Larry and Anita Gee, Leroy and Delia Gee, and daughter-in-law Irene Gee.
He is also survived by six grandchildren – Melissa, Amanda, Rubi, Matthew, Robert and Alina.
Mr. Gee was a giving person, contributing to various Chinese Associations, their building funds and scholarship programs. He also enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, and returning to China and visiting his village.
He will be greatly missed by all of his family, relatives, and friends, having touched our lives in his kind and gentle ways. His smile will be missed, but always remembered.
