Dodgers’ Turner has broken wrist

-

Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner, a 2017 All-Star, has a broken left wrist after being hit by a pitch by A’s right-hander Kendall Graveman on Monday night during a Cactus League game in Glendale, Ariz.

Turner was struck in the first inning. He grunted and winced as he jogged away from the plate toward the dugout, his hand hanging limp at his side. He was quickly visited by a trainer and replaced by Donovan Solano.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced the diagnosis after the game.

Turner hit .322 with 21 homers and 71 RBIs last season. He also led the team and finished third in the majors by getting plunked 19 times.

Altuve deal done: Astros second baseman Jose Altuve finalized a contract extension that guarantees the AL MVP an additional $151 million over five seasons. Altuve, 27, had been among baseball’s best bargains. He agreed in 2013 to a deal that originally guaranteed $12.5 million from 2014-17 and included club options for 2018 at $6 million and 2019 at $6.5 million.

Pitching updates: Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Zack Greinke won’t be the team’s Opening Day starter. Lovullo said the tightness that Greinke experienced in his groin in his latest Cactus League start Wednesday means ruling him out for the March 29 regular-season opener against the Rockies.

Mets left-hander Jason Vargas could miss up to six weeks after he has surgery Tuesday for a broken right hand, an injury incurred last week.

Tigers pitching prospect Franklin Perez is expected to miss at least three months with a right lat strain. Perez, 20, was acquired by Detroit in the trade that sent Justin Verlander to Houston last season.
