Tottenham ends drought at Chelsea

-

Dele Alli issued a timely reminder of his skills by scoring twice in four minutes to end Tottenham’s 28-year wait for a victory at Chelsea.

The 3-1 win in the London derby didn’t end merely a frustrating drought at Stamford Bridge but also extended Tottenham’s lead over Chelsea for the fourth Champions League place to eight points in the Premier League.

Chelsea won’t be surrendering only the Premier League trophy to Manchester City but facing a season out of Europe’s elite competition.

After waiting 22 years to finish above Arsenal, Tottenham is almost certain to finish above its north London rival for a second successive season.

Qualifying for the lucrative Champions League for a third successive season is more significant for a team that had contested the European Cup only twice before Mauricio Pochettino took charge in 2014.

Atlético Madrid took advantage of Barcelona’s stumble and kept alive its title hopes by defeating Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 in the Spanish league. Kevin Gameiro converted a first-half penalty to move Atlético nine points back of leader Barcelona with eight matches remaining.

Werder Bremen defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 at home in the Bundesliga to further ease any relegation worries. Bremen, which had been in the relegation zone until the 20th round, is 10 points clear with six games remaining.

Commonwealth Games: Organizers have summoned the team leaders from a competing country to an official meeting over a breach of the event’s antidoping guidelines. The country wasn’t identified.

Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive David Grevemberg confirmed Monday that syringes were found at the athletes village at Gold Coast, Australia, over the weekend. The opening ceremony is Wednesday.
