Raiders add receiver/returner

The Raiders signed former Giants receiver Dwayne Harris, 30, who gives them an experience­d kick returner after they traded Cordarrell­e Patterson to the Patriots last month.

Harris spent three seasons with the Giants after four in Dallas. In 2013, Harris was second in the league with an average of 30.6 yards per kickoff return on 28 attempts.

A Pro Bowl special-teams player in 2016 with the Giants, Harris missed all but five games last season with a foot injury. Obituary: Ski-racing pioneer Bob Beattie, who helped launch the Alpine World Cup circuit more than 50 years ago, has died. He was 85. He coached the U.S. ski team, won two collegiate titles at Colorado and was a frequent TV commentato­r, calling Franz Klammer’s famous Olympic gold-medal run in 1976. Basketball: Clemson guards Marcquise Reed and Shelton Mitchell will enter the NBA draft, as will Miami 6-foot-11 sophomore forward Dewan Huell, Michigan State freshman Jaren Jackson and Penn State point guard Tony Carr.

The University of San Diego dropped the interim tag for basketball coach Sam Scholl, who was named acting head when Lamont Smith resigned following a domestic-violence arrest for which he was not charged.

Colleges: Gonzaga will remain in the WCC, athletic director Mike Roth told the SpokesmanR­eview of Spokane, Wash. The Zags had considered a move to the Mountain West. The WCC recently made changes to scheduling and revenue distributi­on that Gonzaga had wanted. College baseball: Tim Tawa’s two-run homer in the fifth inning tied the game and Nico Hoerner’s RBI single in the seventh put Stanford ahead to stay as the second-ranked Cardinal (21-3) picked up a 4-3 win over visiting Gonzaga (13-13).

USF (18-10) lost 5-2 to visiting Oregon (16-11). The Dons’ Riley Helland was named WCC Player of the Week, going 9-for-15 in four games. His 12-game hitting streak and 25-game on-base streak came to an end against the Ducks.

Cal’s Andrew Vaughn was named Pac-12 Player of the Week for the second time this year. He went 9-for-18 with two doubles, two homers and nine RBIs as the Bears won three of four. Vaughn is tied for the national lead with 14 homers.
