Cook’s NBA stats echo G League marks

OKLAHOMA CITY — Point guard Quinn Cook’s recent emergence with the Warriors has overshadowed a special honor: He is the first player in the 17-year history of the G League (formerly the Development League) to shoot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from three-point range and 90 percent from the foul line in a season.

One of Golden State’s two players on a two-way contract, Cook, 25, averaged a team-high 25.3 points on 52.4 percent shooting from the field, 43.7 percent from three-point range and 95 percent from the foul line in 29 games for Santa Cruz.

Such dominance has translated to the NBA, where Cook is shooting 49.3 percent from the field, 42.9 from three and 90.5 from the line. With Stephen Curry sidelined probably until at least the Western Conference semifinals by a left MCL sprain, the Warriors are expected to waive someone to free up a spot on the playoff roster for Cook.

The 50-40-90 club, considered the gold standard for shooters, is an exclusive NBA circle. Only seven players who logged the minimum number of games — Larry Bird, Mark Price, Reggie Miller, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Durant and Curry — have finished a regular season shooting at least 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from three-point range and 90 percent from the foul line.

Durant recorded the feat in 2013-14, when he won his MVP award, and Curry did it in his unanimous MVP season of 2015-16. Perhaps the greatest three-point shooter in league history not named Curry, Klay Thompson announced at media day in September that he was eyeing membership in the 50-40-90 club.

Though Thompson is shooting 43.9 percent from threepoint range, he is 49.1 percent from the field and 83.2 percent from the foul line. Durant and Curry are only one category shy of rejoining the 50-40-90 club this season. Durant is 89.0 percent from the foul line. Curry is 49.5 percent from the field. Injury updates: In addition to Curry and Patrick McCaw (lumbar-spine contusion), Andre Iguodala (left knee soreness), Shaun Livingston (personal reasons), Kevon Looney (flu-like symptoms) and Omri Casspi (sprained right ankle) were ruled out of Tuesday night’s game against the Thunder.
