Herbert Allen West

1932-2018

aka Herb or Herbie - died on March 20 at Aegis of Corte Madera. Herb started out, grew up, and lived most of his life in Marin County. Born at Cottage Hospital on July 19, 1932 to Maile and James West of San Rafael, he joined a familiar family of six boys including Jimbo, George, Jack, and their two cousins, Cedric and Peter Clute. He attended E Street Grammar School and then went on to graduate from the Tamalpais School For Boys where he served as Student Body President, was Quarterbac­k on the football team, and played Center on the Basketball Team.

Herb was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity at Stanford University where he graduated in the Class of 1955 and was immediatel­y drafted in to the Army Signal Corps and served two years in Landstuhl, Germany. He returned home and married Jan Hickman in September of 1957. In the following five years, they welcomed their two children, CW and Erin Elizabeth.

In subsequent years, Herb joined with Norman Scheidt in a Commercial Real estate Developmen­t Partnershi­p and, at the same time, he and his wife served as the Executive Directors of the San Rafael Canal Ministry. Herb was a long-time member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, as a Leader in the Men’s Group, serving on the Vestryand as the Senior Warden. He was also the President of the Board of Santa Sabina Retreat Center on the grounds of Dominican Convent. For many years Herb was a dedicated mentor to young people who were starting out in the areas of Business and Social Service. Herb loved to travel - and did so to many places around the world, but his favorite destinatio­n - the place where he was happiest - was to his special home in Alaeloa, Maui.

Herb is predecease­d by his parents, his brothers, Jimbo, George, Jack and his cousin Peter. He is survived by his wife, Jan, his daughter, Erin, his son, CW, his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, his cousin, Cedric and by his favorite dog……..Daisy! He is also survived by many loving nephews and nieces - all who have wonderful memories of their uncle.

Herb West was a person of great integrity, known by all of his family and friends as a humble, loving, kind, fun, and most generous Gentleman.

A Memorial Service for Herb will take place at 2PM on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 14 Lagunitas Road, Ross. A Reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
