Magic Butler "James"

-

In the show ring, James was always totally focused on jumping a smooth, clean round. Consistently placing in the top ribbons, he was Champion or Reserve in the Amateur Owner Hunter Division many times over during his long show career. He and his owner showed out of Apple Ridge Stables in Wisconsin, which was owned by current Olympian Beezie Madden's parents. Showing throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and Michigan on the A Circuit, James was well known for his perfect form over fences 1972-1995

and his endearing personality. One of his specialties was throwing back a bottle of beer held between held between his teeth . . . without spilling very much after a hard day showing.

Known as an escape artist, he would often belly under his show stall gate and head for the food tents. One memorable escape caused his owner to pay for the 7 cotton candies when James was found licking off the entire display of treats. "Would the owner of a large black horse in a blue fly sheet PLEASE come to the Food

Vendor Area!" was frantically belted over the sound system.

James was a real character, more like a huge friendly dog than a show horse. He was calm on trail rides, excited when hunting and loved loading himself onto the trailer to and from shows.

James lives on in our memories and is still talked about often and greatly missed.

"May you be turned out in the big pasture in the sky, getting as many Snickers and Rolo candy bars as you want!"
