Ohtani goes deep again for Angels

-

Shohei Ohtani didn’t think his long drive to center field would get out of the park, so he sprinted around first. It did, his second homer in two games at Angel Stadium.

Ohtani had made the same sprint with the same thought one day earlier, when his first big-league homer also surprised him by flying over the wall.

The Angels’ two-way player is doing things even he can’t believe during his first week in the majors.

Ohtani’s two-run homer off AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber tied the game and Zack Cozart’s shot in the 13th gave the Angels a 3-2 victory over Cleveland on Wednesday.

“There was a runner on second base, so I was just trying to get a base hit and keep my swing compact, and it ended up clearing the fence,” Ohtani said.

Cozart’s first career walk-off homer came against Zach McAllister.

Ohtani will make his first home pitching start Sunday against the A’s, a week after beating them at the Coliseum.

“At the plate, he’s starting to get comfortable,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “You can see the big power he has. Corey Kluber is a guy that does not give up a lot of home runs.” Yankees Stanton with his first turned 7, Rays Yankee boos 2: Giancarlo Stadium to cheers home run drive in pinstripes, in the first inning a goahead to help New York complete a two-game sweep. Stanton turned on a high slider from Blake Snell, driving the ball 458 feet to left field at 117.9 mph for a two-run homer. Acquired from Miami in December, the major-league home run champion was booed a day earlier when he struck out five times in the Yankees’ home opener. Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez also hit two-run homers. Luis Severino (2-0) allowed two runs and five hits with seven strikeouts in 71⁄3 innings, the longest outing by a New York starter this year. Diamondbacks 3, Dodgers 0: Patrick Corbin carried a no-hit bid into the fifth for host Arizona and shut out Los Angeles on one hit over 71⁄3 innings, striking out a career-high 12. The Diamondbacks swept the threegame series and won their ninth straight regular-season game against the Dodgers, who had just one hit in the game. Corbin (2-0) retired 14 batters in a row to start the game, eight on strikeouts. Matt Kemp’s bloop double with two outs in the fifth broke up the no-hitter. Rockies 5, Padres 2: Jon Gray pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking none for visiting Colorado. A night after he had three homers and five RBIs, rookie Christian Villanueva was held hitless in three at-bats by Gray. Twins 7, Pirates 3: Brian Dozier homered for the third straight game in frigid conditions in Pittsburgh as Minnesota handed the Pirates their first loss of the season. Dozier’s third-inning drive was his fourth in four days. Josh Bell homered through snow flurries in the first inning for Pittsburgh. Mets 4, Phillies 2: Yoenis Céspedes homered, Amed Rosario hit a two-run triple and New York’s bullpen faced the minimum batters over five scoreless innings to sweep the weather-shortened two-game series at Citi Field. Astros 3, Orioles 2: Josh Reddick had three hits, and Alex Bregman’s tie-breaking RBI single in the seventh inning lifted Houston to a three-game sweep at home. Reddick, who started the season 1-for-11, singled three times after hitting a two-run homer and a grand slam in his last two at-bats Tuesday night. Braves 7, Nationals 1: Mike Foltynewicz held visiting Washington to four hits, two walks and one run in 51⁄3 innings, with eight strikeouts, to outpitch Max Scherzer. Scherzer gave up six hits, two walks and five runs — two earned — in five innings, with seven strikeouts. Cardinals 6, Brewers 0: Carlos Martinez pitched into the ninth and struck out 10 to beat Milwaukee at hitterfriendly Miller Park. White Sox 4, Blue Jays 3: Matt Davidson hit his fourth home run of the season as Chicago snapped host Toronto’s fourgame winning streak.
