Griffin III to back up Flacco in Baltimore
Robert Griffin III is poised to resume his NFL career about 35 miles away from where he started it.
The former Washington quarterback, who was selected No. 2 overall in the 2012 draft, reached agreement on a oneyear contract with the Baltimore Ravens, who love the idea of having the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner backing up 10-year starter Joe Flacco.
“Obviously, his personality, he’s a confident guy. He’s a very talented quarterback,” head coach John Harbaugh said. “He’s had a lot of success in this league early. We’re excited about it. We felt like we needed a No. 2 quarterback.”
Griffin’s previous stop in an injury-riddled career came in 2016 with the Cleveland Browns. He started five games, winning one of them.
1 The 49ers added to their linebacker group by signing free agent Korey Toomer to a one-year contract. Toomer, 29, has played for four teams over the past four seasons after being drafted in 2012 by Seattle, when current 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was on the Seahawks’ staff as a defensive quality-control coach.
Toomer started eight games in each of the past two seasons for the Chargers. Last season, he recorded 48 tackles along with two forced fumbles and an interception that he returned 59 yards for a touchdown against the Bills. — Matt Kawahara
