Jerome A Tulchin 19252018

Jerome Tulchin recently passed away at home at the age of 92. Born in Chicago, IL to Albert and Emma Tulchin, he grew up and lived in the Chicago area for many years. Jerry served in the Pacific Theatre during World War 2 as a U.S. Army Medical Corpsman. After discharge, he attended Roosevelt University in Chicago earning a B.S. in Biology.

His various occupations included serving as a civilian inspector for US Army Quartermaster Corps during the Korean War, followed by working as a pharmaceutical rep for Lederle Labs from 1954 to 1968, then transferring to Fischer Scientific for which he worked until retiring in 1980. He then went back to school completing a paralegal curriculum at City Colleges and worked part time as a legal courier for many years.

While on a business trip in 1971, Jerry fell in love with San Francisco. In short order, he and his wife, Beverly, made it their goal to move to San Francisco, which they ultimately did in 1973.

Jerry is remembered as charming, hardworking and dutiful to both work and family. A quick wit with lightening memory, he was a master storyteller. He easily made friends in his beloved city of SF and throughout his many travels in the states and abroad. He loved a good meal (sans broccoli) and good drink(s) combined with good company. He could recite the details of such an evening so that one could believe to have been there. Forever curious, Jerry was an ardent movie fan, prolific reader and classical music aficionado. He was systematic and always organized to the point that Jerry proofed (t)his obituary. By car or on his sailboat, Solitude, he freely gave his funicular “Uncle Jerry” tours for friends or family, providing an animated, intimate, educational and gastronomical experience in and around the Bay area he so loved. A family member recalls him glancing at a magazine in a dental office. It listed the five best places to retire. He remarked, “I’m already in the best place!”

He is survived by a son Harry (ex-Salle), grandson Orion (Chrissie) and great-grandchildren Ava and Hunter, a niece Andrea (Rob) Sobczak, and nephews Jeffrey (Lisa) and David Goldstein, as well as grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Beverly and daughter Jill.

The Tulchins and the extended family members and many friends wish to profoundly thank Bay Area End of Life Options and Hospice Care by the Bay for their incredible professional services in helping enrich their lives, as well as Jerry’s, during his final days. No funeral services will be held, memorials can be sent to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Scholarship Fund.
