Pinder, Powell go on DL

ANAHEIM — Chad Pinder went on Oakland’s disabled list Saturday two days after hyperextending his left knee, and several hours later, center fielder Boog Powell joined him there.

The A’s will call up outfielder Mark Canha on Sunday, The Chronicle has learned, a day after bringing up top prospect Franklin Barreto to fill in for Pinder.

“I’m obviously happy to be here, but hearing about Pinder, who got hurt, is tough, because he’s a really good friend of mine,” Barreto said, with Juan Dorado interpreting.

Powell sprained his right knee when he caught a spike while running the bases Friday; he will be sent for an MRI exam Monday, according to

manager Bob Melvin. Canha, who has been a regular with Oakland at times, is 2-for-8 with a homer and a walk in two games at Triple-A Nashville.

Pinder missed time last season with a hamstring strain and, late in the season, a concussion. He incurred his latest injury in the eighth inning Thursday against Texas while in center. Melvin said Pinder has a bone bruise on the tibia near his knee.

Trayce Thompson, added to the roster Saturday after being claimed on waivers Thursday, also could see more

action. Thompson is expected to start Tuesday and Wednesday against his former club, the Dodgers, with left-handers on the mound both days.

Barreto also may be an option in the outfield, though Melvin said he primarily will fill in for shortstop Marcus Semien and second baseman Jed Lowrie. “We’ve talked about him some in the outfield before,” Melvin said. “He’ll probably take some balls in the outfield during BP just to give us some options.”

Barreto, 22, played 25 games with Oakland last year, which should help him, but, he added, “It’s a little strange. I’m accustomed to playing every day, and coming off the bench is a little different, but I have to be prepared and do whatever they ask of me.” Cahill’s night: Trevor Cahill, who is likely to be called up to start April 17, worked four innings for Nashville, allowing three hits, three walks and two runs, one earned, with three strikeouts.
