Theodore Fred Genis (known as Fred or Papou by his family), a 38 year resident of Millbrae California passed away on 3/21/18, in Palo Alto surrounded by his wife and daughter at his bedside at the age of 86. He was extremely kind hearted, giving, supportive and a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

Fred, as he was known to everyone, is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marilynne Bensen-Genis and their two children: Daughter, Kristin Genis-Lund and husband Kevin; Son Timothy Genis and wife Cathy. Fred has 4 grandchildren: Shannon, Maddie, Emily, and Lila.

He was born in San Francisco California on April 4, 1931. He was the 4th child to Constantine Genis and Demetria Legomenos-Genis and sibling to George Genis, Becky Genis-Valos and Steve Genis, predeceased. He is survived by one brother, Pericles Genis.

Fred was a family man. He graduated from Mission High School, San Francisco CA in 1949. He served in the Korean War as an airplane mechanic stationed in Germany in the early 50s. He spent his life working in the automotive industry as an auto mechanic in the SF Bay Area and retired in 1996, after 43 years. He loved the opera and musical theater and supported both his children in their musical endeavors. For many years he served as an usher at the SF Opera and at the Orpheum.

Fred continued to work on cars after retirement and was incredibly organized. For a number of years, he drove the large articulated buses in the Bay Area. He loved to learn new computer applications, watch old movies and football (he was a 49ers faithful fan), garden and take care of his daughter’s dog when she was traveling. He enjoyed volunteering and spent many years with Redi Wheels, shuttling travelers from the SF airport. He loved traveling, the highlight being a European tour with his immediate family and the Boston Symphony on their orchestral tour throughout Germany in 2015. Another wonderful trip was a 50th Anniversary celebration in New York with his whole family. But most of all, he absolutely LOVED to spend time with his family. He will be greatly missed by all those who had the honor and privilege of knowing him.

A Memorial ‘Celebration of Life’ service is planned on May 5th, 2018 at 5:30p at the Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Ave, Los Altos, CA 94024. Flowers are welcome, however in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
