Carole “Hether” Hetherton Ludwick

September 17, 1944 – March 26, 2018

Resident of Oakland After her birth in London, England, Hether travelled on ship as an infant with her Mother to Canada. Her father was an allied soldier fighting in World War II, survivor of the Battle of the Bulge and a secondary invasion at Normandy. Her family reunited in Canada and later relocated to Anaheim, CA. She graduated Marywood High School in Orange, CA and Dominican College in San Rafael, CA.

Hether was a loving wife of 50 years, dedicated mother and grandmothe­r. She was preceded in death by her parents Gordon David Hetherton and Nora Una Ryan, and survived by husband Edward C. Ludwick, children Hether (Victor Krasny), Edward “Ted” (Summer Martin), Gordon (Lauren JensenAkul­a) and Toby (Micheline Duterte). Grandchild­ren: Quincy Kye, Ruby Joy, Zoe Danielle, Edward “Teddy” Joseph, and Sophia Marilyn. Siblings: Bruce Hetherton, Kerry Ammann, Maria Hetherton Bales and Timothy Hetherton.

Known for her colorful outfits and warm sense of humor, Hether was a proud Johns Hopkins Fellow. She ablative absolutely loved teaching Latin and Ancient History to middle school and high school students. She was a mentor to many students, several of which were inspired to study Classics in their college careers. She was a mother to many cats (survived by Steiffie and Stuart). Known for her shopping prowess, she generously and thoughtful­ly supplied clothes, goods and gifts to her friends and family.

She could have been a Jeopardy champion, tuning in daily, and impressing all with her vast knowledge cultivated by years of avid reading and Quiz Bowl coaching. Hether spent countless hours reading to her children, tutoring students and attending mass at Corpus Christi Church. A beloved Parishione­r, she was known as an 8 o’clocker, starting each day by attending church.

Hether passed away on her Mother’s Birthday after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, students and cats. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 14th at 10am at Corpus Christi Church in Piedmont. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Corpus Christi Church.
