RYAN KOST’S OFF-THERADAR PICKS

-

Charlize Theron: Quick recap: Charlize Theron has played, among other people: a serial killer (“Monster”), an incredibly skilled spy (“Atomic Blonde”), a post-apocalyptic badass (“Mad Max: Fury Road”) and a scenestealing wicked witch (“Snow White and the Huntsman”). This is all to say that when she comes to town for a San Francisco International Film Festival conversation, it’ll be a little bit of everything — aside from boring. 7:30 p.m. Sunday, April 8. Tickets may be available at the door. Castro Theatre, S.F. www.sffilm.org

The Soft Moon: The Soft Moon, the darkwave band that sounds both sharp-edged and gauzy all at once, blessed us with another album earlier this year. And now they’re in the middle of a tour in support of their new songs, which, happy to say, are every bit as good as their older tracks. 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 11. $16. The Independent, S.F. www.theindependentsf. com Show Us Your Spine: Radar Productions is back with its iconic Radar Reading Series. Now 14 years old, the group has switched it up a bit. Rather than the usual 12 readings a year, organizers are focusing on six, so that the participants can take advantage of a one-month residency in which they create something inspired by the Hormel Center LGBT archives. Afterward, they’ll present their work. This reading is the second of the series. 6 p.m. Thursday, April 12. Free. Third Floor of San Francisco Main Library, S.F. www. radarproductions.org

¡Demasiado!: SOMArts Cultural Center, an indispensable exhibition and art-making space for emerging (and frequently disenfranchised) creatives in the Bay Area, is throwing an “immersive art party, community meal and dance party” in support of their programs. The lineup — DJs, performers, etc. — is incredible. And they’re using the festivities as an opportunity to honor René Yañez, one of the elders of the Bay Area Chicano arts movement. 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, April 14. $110 for dinner and party. $25 for party. DJ Asmara: San Francisco’s Molly House Records has been on a hot streak lately, bringing in some of the best underground club DJs out there. Last month, they invited Mexico City’s Mexican Jihad to the Stud. This month, they outdo themselves again with DJ Asmara, one half of the duo Nguzunuguzu. Her sets are always entrancing and always surprising. 10 p.m. Saturday, April 14. $10. The Stud, S.F. http://mollyhouse records.com
