NEWS OF THE DAY
From Across the Nation
1 Immigrants injured: A horse trailer carrying about 18 people who entered the country illegally overturned on a California highway just north of the border with Mexico. Several people inside the trailer were hurt in the crash Saturday near Campo (San Diego County), with injuries described as moderate and minor. Six were hospitalized. The California Highway Patrol said a witness reported that the trailer being hauled by a pickup truck began to fishtail and eventually tipped over along Interstate 8. The pickup driver was not identified.
2 Fatal shootings: Police in Illinois identified a 22-year-old suspect Sunday and charged him in an arrest warrant with using an assault rifle to fatally shoot three people on a charter bus. The Rockford Police Department said Raheem King was still at large Sunday after the shooting the day before on the private bus. King was a passenger on the bus when he opened fire, police said. He is charged in the warrant with first-degree murder. The victims were not identified, and no motive was described.
3 Bus crash: A charter bus carrying teenagers returning from a spring break trip Sunday night struck a bridge overpass on Long island, seriously injuring six passengers and mangling the entire length of the top of the bus. New York State Police say the crash happened on the Southern State Parkway in Lakeview. Thirty-seven other passengers suffered minor injuries. The driver is being evaluated, police say.
4 Home explosion: Five people — including two police officers — were injured after a sport utility vehicle crashed into a home in a Dallas suburb, hit a natural gas line and exploded. One of two officers responding to the crash Saturday was approaching the home in Hurst when it blew up. Police rescued a couple and their adult son. A relative said 61-year-old Dixie Bridges was hospitalized with burns. The driver of the vehicle, Arnulfo Castro, 40, was arrested for driving without a license. Hurst city spokeswoman Kara McKinney said the driver told investigators he lost control after the brakes failed.
5 Knife attack: A knife-wielding man injured three people in an attack in Indianapolis after being told to stop playing a siren on a bullhorn, authorities said Sunday. James Anderson Jr., 28; Edward Lee Atkins, 26; and Johnny Gilson, 46, were injured in the attack Saturday, police said. Gary Madison, 57, faces three preliminary charges of battery with a deadly weapon, jail records showed. Four people, including Madison, were hospitalized after the attack, two in critical condition and two in serious condition, Fire Department Battalion Chief Rita Reith said. Their conditions Sunday were not clear, but a police report said Madison was being held in jail. A witness said the man pulled out a knife after he was asked to silence his siren and lunged at two women. Others then rushed the man, who was held until police arrived.
