NEWS OF THE DAY

1 Border reinforcements:

The deployment of National Guard members to the U.S.-Mexico border at President Trump’s request was under way Tuesday with a gradual ramp-up of troops under orders to help curb illegal immigration. The Trump administration also announced that Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen will visit this week a stretch of new border wall breaking ground in New Mexico, putting additional focus on what Trump has called a crisis of migrant crossings and crime. The Republican governors of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico have committed 1,600 Guard members to the border. The only holdout border state was California, led by Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown, who has not announced whether troops from his state’s National Guard will participate and has repeatedly fought with Trump over immigration policy.

2 Another departure:

The Trump administration announced another major departure from its senior ranks on Tuesday, with the resignation of Thomas Bossert as President Trump’s chief adviser on homeland security. Bossert’s resignation coincided with the arrival of John Bolton as the president’s national security adviser, and it was an unmistakable sign that Bolton is intent on naming his own people. Bossert, who served in the George W. Bush administration, made a name for himself in the current White House as the public face of the administration’s response to hurricanes that tore through Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.

3 Tuition raise:

Arizona’s three state universities and its largest community college district say they will raise tuition immediately for young immigrants granted deferred deportation status in the wake of a court ruling. The Arizona Supreme Court ruled that young immigrants in the program started by former President Barack Obama are not eligible for lower in-state college tuition. The unanimous ruling this week will affect at least 2,000 students attending the state’s largest community college district and hundreds more at other colleges and the state’s three public universities. The Maricopa County Community Colleges District and state universities said they would raise tuition for the coming school year.

4 No survivors:

All six people aboard a small plane were killed when it crashed on a golf course in a Phoenix suburb shortly after taking off from a nearby airport, police said Tuesday. The identities of those killed in the Monday night’s fiery crash in Scottsdale have yet to be released. Nobody on the ground was hurt. The plane went down on the TPC Scottsdale Champions Golf Course.

5 Boy arrested:

Philadelphia police say they have arrested a 12-year-old boy who was walking down a street with a loaded AR-15 rifle. Authorities say a 19-year-old man carrying a handgun also was arrested. The 19-year-old faces charges including terroristic threatening and corruption of a minor. No charges have been announced for the 12-year-old.
