Legalized pot: A Republican senator from Colorado on Friday said President Trump has promised to support legislation protecting the marijuana industry in states that have legalized the drug, removing a threat placed by the president’s own attorney general just three months ago. Sen. Cory Gardner said Trump made the pledge to him Wednesday night. Gardner has been pushing to reverse a decision made by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in January that removed prohibitions from federal prosecution against people who were otherwise following laws in states like Colorado and California that have legalized the drug.
Black teen targeted: A white man has been jailed after shooting at a black teen who police say knocked on his door in suburban Detroit to ask for directions to school. Brennan Walker, 14, was not injured. Deputies were called to the Rochester Hills’ home Thursday morning after a woman told 911 that her husband, Jeffrey Zeigler, 53, had chased a black male who tried to break in. Walker, of Rochester Hills, said he was trying to explain to the woman that he needed directions when a man came downstairs and grabbed a gun. Walker said he “started to run” and that’s when he “heard the gunshot.”
FBI review: Andrew McCabe, the fired FBI deputy director, misled investigators multiple times about his role in a news media disclosure about Hillary Clinton just days before the 2016 presidential election, according to a Justice Department watchdog report obtained by the Associated Press on Friday. The report alleges that McCabe authorized FBI officials to speak with a Wall Street Journal reporter for a story about an investigation into the Clinton Foundation and then misled FBI and Justice Department officials when later questioned about it. McCabe denied the report’s allegations in a detailed rebuttal statement. President Trump has criticized McCabe as a partisan hack, accusing him of covering up unspecified “lies and corruption” at the FBI.
Wildfires: Fast-moving wildfires have forced the evacuation of about 1,400 people in three Oklahoma towns. Dewey County Sheriff Clay Sander said deputies told residents in Seiling, Taloga and Putnam to leave. Gov. Mary Fallin declared a state of emergency Friday in 55 of the state’s 77 counties. Blazes have scorched more than 200,000 acres in Dewey and neighboring Woodward counties. A turkey hunter was hospitalized with burns after being trapped in one fire.
Ferrell crash: Video shows that actor Will Ferrell was treated by paramedics after sustaining minor injuries from a rollover crash. The video by OnScene.TV shows Ferrell, 50, talking to a firefighter shortly after the Thursday night crash. A California Highway Patrol report says a Toyota struck the rear of a limousine SUV after veering into its lane on Interstate 5 in Aliso Viejo (Orange County), causing it to hit the center divider and overturn. Three men in the limousine SUV had minor injuries, while a 27-yearold woman had critical injuries.
