Thumb keeps Posey out

SAN DIEGO — Manager Bruce Bochy would have loved to play five-time All-Star Buster Posey on Sunday and have him catch Tyler Beede, who made his second bigleague start and was sent to the minors after the game.

Posey is 15-for-48 (.313) and has been especially tough on lefties, going 8-for-22. The Padres started lefty Joey Lucchesi.

Posey was shelved with right thumb soreness, which he felt Saturday while swinging. The Giants don’t consider it a serious matter, and Bochy said he expects Posey to return to the lineup Tuesday in Arizona, following Monday’s off day.

“He’ll be fine on Tuesday,” said Bochy, anticipating the swelling will subside. “In the past, there were a couple of times we’ve had to do this, get him a day and he’s fine. If we let it go, then it gets to the point he needs more time.”

Nick Hundley caught Beede, who was pulled in the fourth inning. Williamson’s hot bat: A day after Mac Williamson hit his latest home run for Triple-A Sacramento, Bochy said the Giants won’t rush to make a roster move.

“You never know,” Bochy said. “They haven’t played that many games there. Let these guys get some playing time and settle in just like our guys. Right now, we have no plans of making any changes.”

Williamson hit five homers in eight games then went 3for-3 Sunday, giving him a .548 average (17-for-31). He also had a hot bat in spring training, hitting .318 with four homers. Briefly: Shohei Ohtani’s routine has been to pitch every Sunday, but because Sunday’s Angels game was canceled, he’ll start Tuesday. That would keep Ohtani from facing the Giants next Sunday in Anaheim. Ohtani doesn’t pitch on four days’ rest . ... Pitchers took bunting practice before the game, and Derek Holland put down some from both sides of the plate. He said he has been a switch-hitter since high school.
