Pirates’ Harrison could miss 6 weeks

-

Pittsburgh second baseman Josh Harrison is expected to miss six weeks with a broken bone in his left hand.

The team’s leadoff hitter fractured his pinkie Sunday when he was hit with a pitch by Miami’s Jose Ureña in the third inning of the Pirates’ 7-3 win.

On Monday, Harrison met with a hand specialist in Pittsburgh who diagnosed the injury.

Kiermaier out 2-3 months: Tampa Bay center fielder Kevin Kiermaier has a torn ligament in his right thumb that requires surgery. He could be sidelined for two to three months.

The Rays placed the defensive whiz on the 10-day disabled list a day after he was injured sliding headfirst into second base during a 10-4 loss to the Phillies. The club said surgery will be scheduled soon.

This will be the third straight season the 27-year-old, two-time Gold Glove winner will miss significant time because of injury.

Yankees’ ailments: Jacoby Ellsbury’s latest ailment is plantar fasciitis, preventing the Yankees’ outfielder from fully resuming baseball activities.

The 34-year-old has been on the disabled list since the start of the season. He did not play in any exhibition games from March 1 until March 24 because of an oblique injury and finished spring training 1for-14.

New York manager Aaron Boone disclosed April 3 that Ellsbury had injured a hip during his rehabilitation, and Ellsbury received a cortisone injection last Tuesday. New York had hoped he would resume baseball activities Friday, but Boone said Monday the heel pain had caused another setback. Boone said the oblique had healed.

In the meantime, infielder Brandon Drury says he has batted in big-league games with blurred vision caused by migraines.

Drury has not played since April 6 and has been undergoing tests for the cause of the migraines. He resumed baseball activities before Monday’s homestand opener against Miami and said he has been put on anti-inflammatory medication.

The 25-year-old was obtained from Arizona in February and became New York’s starting third baseman.

“I want nothing more than to go out there and play baseball with a clear vision and a clear head,” Drury said.

Nats add pitcher: Washington added right-hander Jeremy Hellickson to the roster and started him in Monday’s series opener against the Mets. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits in 42⁄3 innings.
