NFL suspends Saints’ Ingram

The NFL says New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram has been suspended for the first four regular-season games of 2018 because of a violation of the league’s performanc­e-enhancing drug policy.

The league did not say whether Ingram tested positive for a performanc­e-enhancing drug or simply a banned masking agent.

The league says Ingram will be eligible to participat­e in all offseason and preseason practices and games, and will be eligible to play in his first regular-season game after the Saints visit the Giants on Sept. 30.

Last season, Ingram rushed for a career-high 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns to go with 416 yards receiving.

Hockey: The Carolina Hurricanes promoted assistant Rod Brind’Amour to head coach. He succeeds Bill Peters, who opted out of his contract last month following his fourth year and subsequent­ly was hired by the Calgary Flames. Brind’Amour becomes the Hurricanes’ third straight first-time NHL head coach, after Kirk Muller and Peters.

College golf: Stanford surged into a tie for the lead with Kent State after the second round of the NCAA women’s regional at Harding Park. Two Cardinal players, Andrea Lee and Ziyi Wang, are tied for second in the individual competitio­n entering Wednesday’s final round. Cal is 13th in the team competitio­n. The top six teams will advance to the Division I championsh­ips, which begin May 18 in Stillwater, Okla.

College basketball: South Carolina added help at point guard with graduate transfer Tre Campbell from Georgetown. He will add immediate help since projected starter Rakym Felder was dismissed from the team last month.

⏩ Chattanoog­a women’s coach Jim Foster is retiring after a four-decade career in which he won more than 900 games. He’s the only women’s coach to earn NCAA Tournament bids with four schools.

College football: Florida defensive coordinato­r Todd Grantham got a three-year deal worth $4.47 million, making him the highest-paid assistant in school history. Grantham will earn $1.39 million this season, $1.49 million in 2019 and $1.59 million in 2020, according to contracts the school released in response to public records requests.

⏩ Ohio State quarterbac­k Joe Burrow says he will transfer. Because he earned his degree this year, he can play immediatel­y at another school as a graduate student.

Tennis: Top-ranked Simona Halep reached the third round of the Madrid Open by beating Elise Martens 6-0, 6-3. Halep will next face Kristyna Pliskova, who defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo 7-5, 6-2.

In men’s play, Juan Martin del Potro marked his clay court season debut with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Damir Dzumhur. He will face Dusan Lajovic in the third round after Lajovic beat Richard Gasquet 7-6 (1), 7-6 (1).
