Maile’s 12th-inning homer beats Boston

Luke Maile hit two home runs, including a two-run shot in the 12th inning that gave Toronto a 5-3 victory over visiting Boston on Friday night.

Maile’s drive off Brian Johnson improved the Blue Jays to 5-0 in extra innings after they overcame an impressive outing by Boston starter Chris Sale.

Curtis Granderson walked to begin the 12th and Maile followed with a drive to right. Maile also hit a game-tying homer off Sale in the seventh. It was the first multihomer game of his career. Maile went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

Sale matched his career high by striking out 15 over a season-high nine innings. He allowed three runs and six hits, and walked none.

The left-hander is the third pitcher in Red Sox history to strike out 15 while walking none. Pedro Martinez had four such games. Roger Clemens had three.

Sale struck out six straight batters over the fourth and fifth innings, getting all six swinging. Nationals 3, D’backs 1: Max Scherzer struck out 11 in seven innings of four-hit ball and Trea Turner led off the game with a home run to lead visiting Washington. Scherzer retired 15 in a row after giving up a home run to David Peralta leading off the third inning. Scherzer also hit an RBI double and remained unbeaten since April 4.

Brewers 11, Rockies 10: Manny Piña hit a tying two-run homer with two outs in the ninth and Travis Shaw delivered a two-out RBI single in the 10th to lift visiting Milwaukee. Trailing 10-8 and down to their last out, the Brewers rallied to tie it off closer Wade Davis, who blew a save for the second time in 16 chances this season.

Mets 3, Phillies 1: Michael Conforto hit a two-run homer in the ninth off closer Hector Neris in Philadelph­ia. Phillies starter Jake Arrieta allowed five hits over 71⁄3 scoreless innings.

Rangers 1, Astros 0: Cole Hamels allowed one hit over six innings to narrowly outduel Justin Verlander in Houston. Hamels allowed six baserunner­s — one hit, three walks and two hit batters — while striking out five.

Cubs 11, White Sox 2: Willson Contreras had two homers, two doubles and drove in a career-high seven runs on his bobblehead day to lead the Cubs over the crosstown White Sox at Wrigley Field. The White Sox matched the 1948 team for the worst 35-game start in franchise history at 9-26.

Orioles 9, Rays 4: Manny Machado hit two home runs, including a grand slam as Baltimore won its third straight. Machado ripped a two-run shot in the first inning and made it 8-1 with a drive in the seventh. Carlos Gomez had two hits and two RBIs for visiting Tampa Bay.

Reds 6, Dodgers 2: Matt Harvey allowed one hit in four scoreless innings in his first start for visiting Cincinnati. Scott Gennett went 4-for-5 with his sixth homer for the Reds, driving in three runs. Marlins 6, Braves 3: J.T. Realmuto had three hits, including his fifth homer, and Miami broke a four-game losing streak. Starlin Castro hit his second homer and drove in two runs for the Marlins. Ozzie Albies moved into a tie for the NL lead in homers, connecting for his 12th in the third inning for visiting Atlanta, which had won eight straight on the road. Twins 5, Angels 4: Visiting Minnesota scored three runs in the ninth, including a home run by Eddie Rosario, who also homered in the sixth. Both were solo shots.

Royals 10, Indians 9: Salvador Perez’s two-run homer in the seventh rallied visiting Kansas City, which trailed 9-4. Alcides Escobar had four RBIs for Kansas City. Lucas Duda doubled three times. Cardinals 9, Padres 5: Paul DeJong homered and drove in a career-high four runs, and Jedd Gyorko, Marcell Ozuna, Harrison Bader and Tommy Pham also went deep to lead visiting St. Louis.

Seattle at Detroit, ppd.: The teams will play two Saturday after being rained out.
