No. 2 Stanford falls at No. 4 Oregon State
Luke Heimlich scattered three hits over eight innings and struck out 14 as fourth-ranked Oregon State (37-7-1, 15-6-1 Pac-12) beat No. 2 Stanford 6-2 in Corvallis. The win was Heimlich’s 12th in 13 decisions. Will Matthiessen hit a tworun homer for the Cardinal (38-7, 17-5) . ... Sam Wezniak homered and knocked in four runs as Cal (27-19, 12-13 Pac-12) scored a 9-3 win over visiting Arizona (29-18, 10-12) . ... Michael Perri and Ross Puskarich each homered and Riley Helland drove in three runs, but USF (25-26, 14-12 WCC) fell 9-7 to visiting BYU (21-24, 10-13) . ... Matthew Kanfer hit a grand slam in the third as Pepperdine (27-18, 15-7 WCC) rolled to a 9-5 win over St. Mary’s (29-19, 13-9) in Moraga.
NFL: The 49ers signed cornerback D.J. Reed Jr., a Kansas State alum they selected in the fifth round of last month’s draft, to a four-year contract. Reed played in 24 games in two years in college and registered 122 tackles, five tackles for loss, seven interceptions, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 32 passes defensed.
⏩ The Raiders waived punter and UC Davis alum Colby Wadman, an expected move after they selected Florida State’s Johnny Townsend in last month’s draft.
⏩ The Titans signed former Cal wide receiver Jordan Veasy to an undrafted free-agent contract. He will participate in Tennessee’s rookie minicamp this weekend.
⏩ The Panthers signed free-agent running back Kenjon Barner from the Eagles to a one-year contract.
Hockey: Captain Patrick Kane scored two goals and added three assists as the United States demolished South Korea 13-1 at the world championship in Herning, Denmark, for a fifth straight victory.
The Czech Republic shut out Belarus 3-0, and Denmark closed in on a quarterfinal berth after beating Norway, also 3-0. Also, France defeated newcomer Austria 5-2 to stay in contention.
Motor sports: Kevin Harvick turned a best lap of 188.811 mph to easily claim the pole for Saturday night’s NASCAR race at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City . ... Will Power won his third IndyCar Grand Prix pole by turning a fast lap of 1 minute, 9.8182 seconds on his final qualifying run at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Soccer: Brazil right back Dani Alves will miss the World Cup, leaving the five-time champion without one of its main leaders. Alves injured his right knee Tuesday in the French Cup final win with Paris Saint-Germain.
Lacrosse: No. 18 Virginia defeated No. 11 Stanford 12-3 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s championship in Harrisonburg, Va. Stanford (15-5) finished the season with the secondmost wins in program history.
Water polo: Six players scored twice and the second-ranked Stanford women defeated No. 8 UC Irvine 14-8 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA championship in Los Angeles. Stanford (19-3) advances to Saturday’s semifinals against No. 3 Cal (20-5), which beat No. 9 Michigan 13-6.
