_1 Missing girls: Police in suburban Detroit resumed digging Monday in an area that might yield the remains of up to seven missing girls. Konnie Beyma’s sister, Kimberly King, disappeared in 1979 at age 12. Beyma was at the site in Macomb Township and said police believe they “are very close” to finding remains. The search began after police interviewed a prisoner locked up for the slaying of a 13-year-old girl. Cindy Zarzycki’s remains were found in 2008 near the same area. Bill Dwyer, police commissioner in Warren, said he’s committed to solving the cold cases. _2 Nanny sentenced: A New York City nanny convicted of brutally murdering two small children in her care was sentenced Monday to life in prison without parole. Yoselyn Ortega was convicted last month in the deaths of 6-year-old Lucia Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim. She had been working for the Krim family for nearly two years when she stabbed the children to death in 2012. The children’s mother had been out with a third child and returned home to find them dead. Their father was out of town. Ortega’s lawyer argued she was too mentally ill to know what she was doing when she killed the children. _3 Plane crash: Remains of three people have been found in the wreckage of a small plane that went down and sparked a wildfire in a rugged area of eastern San Diego County last week. The Sheriff ’s Department said it took considerable effort to reach the victims Sunday on Volcan Mountain and high winds prevented efforts to remove them by helicopter. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says the blaze burned 12 acres and was fully contained. Volcan Mountain is north of the town of Julian. _4 Police response: Cincinnati’s mayor on Monday said the city failed in its response to two 911 calls from a 16-year-old boy who died after being trapped in a minivan. Mayor John Cranley apologized at a meeting about the police response and said the city must do better in the future. Police Chief Eliot Isaac presented the results of an internal investigation to the City Council. The teen’s father found his body April 10 inside the vehicle in a parking lot near his school nearly six hours after Kyle’s first 911 call. A coroner says he died of asphyxiation from his chest being compressed. _5 Charge dropped: Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens declared victory Monday as prosecutors abruptly dropped a felony invasion-of-privacy charge alleging he had taken a revealing photo of a woman with whom he has acknowledged having an affair. The St. Louis circuit attorney’s office said it still plans to pursue the case. But Greitens’ attorneys said the case was crumbling and they doubted any charge would be refiled. The firstterm Republican governor still faces plenty of other problems. Missouri’s Republican legislative leaders renewed calls for Greitens to resign and confirmed they still will convene Friday in a monthlong special session to consider whether to impeach Greitens in an attempt to remove him from office.
