Prospect’s power forces Padres to call him up

-

Outfielder Franmil Reyes was hitting home runs in Triple-A so hard and so often that the San Diego Padres had no choice but to bring him up for his major-league debut.

Reyes, who wasn’t listed among the rebuilding Padres’ top 30 prospects, leads professional baseball in homers after hitting 14 with Triple-A El Paso.

“A smart organization listens to what the bats are telling you, and his bat was screaming at us from El Paso,” said manager Andy Green, who had the 22-year-old Reyes batting sixth and playing right field against the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.

The 6-foot-5, 275-pound Reyes hit eight homers in a five-game stretch earlier this month.

“I’m a big guy. You guys will see a lot of homers, hopefully,” said Reyes, who’s from the Dominican Republic.

Reyes’ mother, Dominga Uribe, arrived from New York, where she’s lived the past eight years, just in time to see him hit monster home runs in batting practice.

“It’s an incredible feeling having my mother here,” Reyes said. “It helps make the dream come true. I’m really, really happy she is here. My mom is my whole life.”

Reyes’ timing is good because outfielders Wil Myers and Hunter Renfroe are on the disabled list.

Reyes said the only thing he can control is his play. “It was just at the right time,” he said.

Osuna out longer: Major League Baseball has extended the administrative leave of Toronto closer Roberto Osuna by seven days through May 21 as the commissioner’s office investigates an assault charge against the All-Star.

Osuna was put on administrative leave by MLB on May 8. The pitcher was charged with one count of assault.

The commissioner’s office announced the extension Monday. Osuna is to appear in court June 18.

Osuna, 23, remains on the restricted list and continues to receive his $5.3 million salary but is ineligible to play. He is 0-0 with nine saves and a 2.93 ERA in 15 games this season. The righty was an All-Star last year when he was 3-4 with 39 saves and a 3.38 ERA.

Evaluation for Cano: The Seattle Mariners say they will have a better idea on the length of Robinson Cano’s recovery time after the second baseman is examined by a hand specialist in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

The eight-time All-Star broke his right pinkie when hit by a pitch from left-hander Blaine Hardy on Sunday at Detroit.

Cano is batting .287 with four homers, 23 RBIs and a .385 on-base percentage in 39 games.

Angels reliever shelved: Los Angeles reliever Keynan Middleton is back on the 10-day disabled list with a damaged ligament in his pitching elbow.

Felix Pena was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Middleton will get a second opinion on his elbow as the Angels evaluate whether he will need potentially serious surgery.

Wright returns: Knuckleballer Steven Wright returned to the Red Sox after serving a 15-game suspension under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy.

The 33-year-old right-hander accepted the penalty in March without an appeal. He started the season on the disabled list while recovering from knee surgery, then served the discipline.

Wright lost $94,624, which comes to 16 days of pay, during the suspension. He allowed seven earned runs in four outings for Triple-A Pawtucket from April 20 through Friday.

Beltre injury: Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre will get his aggravated left hamstring evaluated Tuesday, and the injury could put the active career hits leader back on the disabled list.

Beltre, 39, was off the DL five days before experiencing a similar feeling in a different area of his left hamstring.

Andujar keeps job: Miguel Andujar will keep the Yankees’ third base job, for now. Brandon Drury was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after his injury rehabilitation assignment.

Acquired from Arizona in February, Drury, 25, went on the disabled list April 7 with migraines that caused blurry vision.

Briefly: Ryan Braun was scratched from Milwaukee’s game Monday at Arizona with right mid-back tightness . ... The Tigers put third baseman Jeimer Candelario on the 10-day disabled list with left wrist tendinitis . ... Minnesota catcher Jason Castro will have surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.
