Lyles falls short of Padres’ 1st no-hitter

-

After 7,858 games, the San Diego Padres are still waiting for their first no-hitter.

Jordan Lyles was the latest to give the fans hope, as he retired the first 22 batters Tuesday. But then Colorado’s Trevor Story swatted an 0-1 pitch into left field for a single, leaving Lyles five outs shy of the first perfect game in Padres history.

The host Padres won 4-0 against the Rockies, Lyles’ old team.

Story hit a slider that was down and away. “I just saw a replay on TV. It was a good pitch, exactly where I would throw it again,” said Lyles, who had 10 strikeouts.

Lyles then walked Pat Valaika before making way for Kirby Yates after 85 pitches.

Cubs 3, Braves 2: Cubs catcher Willson Contreras threw out two runners at home plate and another at third before visiting Chicago rallied for two runs in the ninth inning. Back-to-back doubles by Albert Almora Jr. and Addison Russell against closer Arodys Vizcaino tied it at 2, and Ben Zobrist came through with a two-out, run-scoring single. A couple of questionable calls went against the home team in a wild fifth inning in which Contreras threw out runners at home and third after errant pitches got away from him. Chicago’s Yu Darvish returned from the DL after a bout with the flu, working four innings before leaving with cramping. Marlins 4, Dodgers 2: Los Angeles went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and was beaten by a cellar-dweller for the fifth straight game. The Dodgers managed five hits against host Miami after being swept in a four-game series at home by Cincinnati, despite activating third baseman Justin Turner and second baseman Logan Forsythe from the DL prior to the game. They were a combined 1-for-8.

Astros 5, Angels 3: Jose Altuve hit a go-ahead, threerun double in the eighth inning as visiting Houston rallied from a late two-run deficit. Josh Reddick threw out two Los Angeles runners from right field and got a leadoff double in the eighth ahead of Altuve’s bases-clearing hit.

Diamondbacks 2, Brewers 1: Daniel Descalso singled home Jarrod Dyson with two outs in the eighth inning and host Arizona snapped a six-game losing streak. The Diamondbacks opened the game with the worst batting average in the majors, then managed just three hits against starter Jhoulys Chacin and three relievers.

Tigers 9, Indians 8: Cleveland had leads of 4-0 and 8-4 before giving up five runs in the seventh as host Detroit won its third straight. Andrew Miller allowed two inherited runners to score, then allowed two runs of his own.

Mets 12, Blue Jays 2: Noah Syndergaard won for the first time in five weeks, knocking in two runs as host New York ended an offensive slump.

Rays 6, Royals 5: Johnny Field and Jesus Sucre led off the ninth with singles against Kansas City’s Kelvin Herrera, who retired the next two batters before Joey Wendle singled for visiting Tampa Bay.

Twins 4, Cardinals 1: Journeyman catcher Bobby Wilson hit his first home run in more than a year to cap a three-run seventh for host Minnesota. Jose Berrios gave up one run and two hits in 71⁄3 innings for the Twins.

Pirates 7, White Sox 0: Trevor Williams scattered six hits in seven innings and Adam Frazier homered to start a four-run first as host Pittsburgh sent Chicago to its worst start since 1948. Chicago has lost eight of nine and 12 of 14, dropping to a major league-worst 10-28. Pirates center fielder Starling Marte left after the first inning with right side discomfort.

Mariners 9, Rangers 8: Guillermo Heredia singled in former Athletic Ryon Healy in the 11th inning for host Seattle. Kyle Seager drove in three runs for Seattle; Robinson Chirinos did the same for Texas.

Yankees, Nationals suspended: New York rallied from a three-run deficit before the game was suspended because of rain in Washington tied 3-3 after 5½ innings. It is to continue at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday before the finale of the two-game series.

Orioles, Phillies postponed: The Camden Yards grounds crew covered the field with a tarp after the national anthem, ahead of a thunderstorm that never let up, and the game was postponed. The game will made up on July 12 at a time to be announced.
