Rays’ Romo to make his first career start

-

Former Giants fan favorite Sergio Romo is set to do something he has never done in his 11 years as a major- leaguer: Start.

Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash plans to start the reliever, who is in his second season with the Rays, on Saturday against the Angels in Anaheim. The plan is for Romo to go an inning or two before giving way to rookie Ryan Yarbrough.

“I can tell you this: Sergio Romo’s really excited about this,” Cash told MLB Network Radio. “He might be the most excited of anybody in baseball.”

Cash has been experimenting with his pitching staff all season, using mostly a four- man rotation, with the fifth start being a bullpen game.

Cash said Romo’s right- handed sidearm delivery and sliderheavy repertoire could keep Angels right- handed batters Mike Trout, Justin Upton, Zack Cozart, Albert Pujols, Andrelton Simmons and Ian Kinsler off- balance.
