Mets defeat Diamondbacks as deGrom strikes out 13

-

Jacob deGrom matched a career high with 13 strikeouts, Michael Conforto went 4- for- 4 with two RBIs and the Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3- 1 on Friday night in New York.

After an abbreviated outing last weekend in his return from the disabled list, deGrom ( 4- 0) threw seven dominant innings. His career- best scoreless streak of 241⁄ 3 innings was snapped when Jake Lamb, just back from a shoulder injury, hit an RBI double in the sixth.

Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt fanned all four times against deGrom, who gave up six hits and walked none. The right- hander missed a turn with a hyperextended right elbow before returning Sunday in Philadelphia, only to be removed as a precaution after one inning because it took him 45 pitches to get through the first.

“I was a little worried that he would tire out, just because he’s had such a crazy schedule,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “I was hesitant to put him back out there ( in the seventh), but he really wanted it so we let him go back out and he did a great job.”

Robert Gsellman worked a perfect eighth and Jeurys Familia struck out the side in the ninth for his 12th save.

Mariners 5, Tigers 4: Mitch Haniger doubled in a run to cap host Seattle’s five- run seventh as it erased a 4- 0 deficit. Detroit starter Michael Fulmer had limited the Mariners to two singles through six, but he and relievers Buck Farmer, Daniel Stumpf and Warwick Saupold combined to allow three hits and four walks in the seventh.

Padres 3, Pirates 2: Tyson Ross allowed two runs and five hits in six innings to win for the first time in more than a month as visiting San Diego dealt Pittsburgh its second loss in 10 games. Ross ( 3- 3) ended a five- start winless streak with his first victory since April 13.

Orioles 7, Red Sox 4: Jonathan Schoop homered and Alex Cobb got his first win of the season as Baltimore ended its 13- game road losing streak. Manny Machado went 3- for- 5 with three RBIs for the Orioles. Mookie Betts doubled twice and hit his 14th homer for Boston.

Cubs 8, Reds 1: Jon Lester pitched six dominant innings — combining with three relievers on a two- hitter — and Addison Russell had four hits as visiting Chicago won the opener of a four- game series.

Marlins 2, Braves 0: Dan Straily pitched seven innings and combined with Kyle Barraclough on a four- hitter for visiting Miami. The Marlins got their runs in the sixth on J. T. Realmuto’s RBI triple and Starlin Castro’s RBI double.

Astros 4, Indians 1: Charlie Morton ( 6- 0) held visiting Cleveland to one run and four hits in seven innings as Houston won its third in a row. Morton has won nine consecutive decisions dating to September.

Brewers 8, Twins 3: Jesus Aguilar homered twice and Ji- Man Choi hit a solo home run for visiting Milwaukee. Minnesota first baseman Joe Mauer left in the fifth inning with neck tightness and is considered day to day.

Rangers 12, White Sox 5: Shin- Soo Choo hit his first grand slam in eight years as Texas beat Chicago, which dropped to 4- 16 at home. White Sox outfielder Nicky Delmonico suffered a broken finger when he was hit by Matt Moore’s pitch in the second inning. Delmonico is expected to be out at least four weeks.

Royals 5, Yankees 2: Salvador Perez homered to snap an 0- for- 13 slump and host Kansas City ended a fivegame losing streak. Whit Merrifield had three hits and three stolen bases for the Royals.

Cardinals 12, Phillies 4: Michael Wacha pitched six strong innings for his fifth win and the hosts pounded out a season- high 15 hits on a damp night in St. Louis. The game was delayed by rain for an hour and 35 minutes at the start, and again when home plate umpire David Rackley was unable to continue and had to be replaced by second base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt.

Rays 8, Angels 3: Wilson Ramos hit two home runs as part of a 15- hit attack as visiting Tampa Bay won for the fifth straight time.

Dodgers at Nationals: The game was rained out. Weather permitting, the teams will play a day- night doubleheader Saturday.
