_1 School shooting: Students returning to class Tuesday at a Texas high school where 10 people were killed less than two weeks ago were greeted by an increased police presence and supporters holding signs saying “Santa Fe Strong” and “United We Stand.” Tuesday marked the first day of class at Santa Fe High School since the mass shooting that left eight students and two substitute teachers dead. Students who had classes in the area of the May 18 shooting were first allowed to enter at about 8 a.m., followed by the rest of the student body about two hours later. Authorities have charged student Dimitrios Pagourtzis with capital murder in the attack.
_2 Governor resigns: Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens resigned amid criminal and legislative investigations stemming from an extramarital affair and campaign finance questions over alleged misuse of a charity donor list. The 44-year-old Rhodes Scholar and ex-Navy SEAL made the announcement Tuesday. The resignation takes effect Friday. A St. Louis grand jury indicted Greitens on Feb. 22 on one felony count of invasion of privacy. Prosecutors say he took a compromising photo of a woman with whom he had an affair without her consent in 2015, before his election. The woman told a legislative committee Greitens restrained, slapped, shoved and threatened her during sexual encounters. Greitens has denied criminal wrongdoing. _3 Flood victim: Searchers on Tuesday scouring a river alongside an historic Maryland town ripped apart by flash flooding found the body of a man last seen being swept away by the raging waters as it gutted shops and pushed parked cars into swollen tributaries. Volunteers and crews with trained dogs had been methodically hunting for 39year-old Eddison Hermond, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a sergeant in the Maryland Army National Guard. He disappeared late Sunday afternoon, following torrential rains that prompted destructive flash flooding in historic Ellicott City. Hermond’s body was located in the Patapsco River. He was the only person reported missing in Ellicott City.
_4 Diver died: A fire department diver died after he jumped into the Chicago River in search of a boater who had fallen overboard, officials said. According to the Chicago Fire Department, Juan Bucio, 46, was with a team of divers called to the river in response to a report that a boater had fallen overboard at about 8 p.m. Monday. Bucio jumped in the water but became separated from his dive partner. Bucio was found, pulled from the water and rushed to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 10 p.m. As of Tuesday afternoon, the man who fell overboard had not been found.
_5 Evangelist’s plea: A prosperity gospel televangelist is asking disciples to “pray about becoming a partner” to his mission of obtaining a $54 million private jet. The Louisiana-based ministry of Jesse Duplantis has already paid cash for three other private planes, but he says God told him “I want you to believe in me for a Falcon 7X.” NO LA.com/The Times-Picayune reports that Duplantis made the pitch to his followers in the May 21 edition of his weekly video address. Duplantis says Jesus Christ “wouldn’t be riding a donkey” today — “he’d be in an airplane flying all over the world.”
