Kathleen “Kay” Pomeroy

Kathleen “Kay” Pomeroy passed away May 27, 2018 at her home in Ross.

Kathleen was born in Springfield, Missouri on July 3, 1920. At a young age she moved to Beverly Hills where she attended El Rodeo Elementary School and Beverly Hill High School. Upon graduation, she attended the Wright McMahon Secretarial School. In February 1941, she set sail on the S. S. Lurline for a Hawaiian holiday. On Friday the 13th (the last night out), she met a young man from San Francisco named Bob Pomeroy. Bob was returning to Honolulu where he worked at Pearl Harbor for J.H Pomeroy & Co., Inc, a prime contractor for PNAB (Pacific Naval Air Bases). Bob and Kay had their first date at Trader Vic’s in Honolulu, and their romance blossomed through a stream of letters until Bob’s return to the Mainland in 1943. They were engaged in July and married in Pasadena on November 4, 1943. They lived in Sausalito and then San Francisco, before building their first home in Ross in 1948.

Bob passed away in 1991 after a three year illness. Kay was of immeasurable love, support and care. She was a loving mother to Stephen Pomeroy (Penn Valley), Mark Pomeroy (Beverly Hills), Kathleen Schier and Leslie Morton (St. Louis); a wonderful, generous grandmother to Alexandre Pomeroy, Emily Morton, Heather Tibbetts, Alyssa Schier, and Kimmie Gotch, and a great-grandmother to Hadley Tibbetts. She is also survived by her devoted daughter-in-law Marie Pomeroy, who she considered as her daughter.

Kay’s life was rich and long; she possessed a bright mind, a keen wit, and a joyous sense of humor. Her friends were so very dear, and throughout her life she continued to cultivate new relationships, both young and old, who she welcomed into her heart and home. Among her many interests were her beloved investment club, “The Monday Marginals”, Wednesday Bridge lessons at the T&C that she took for over fifty years, and the Thursday afternoon Symphony series. She had a passion for dogs, and whenever she saw a furry four-legged friend it brought a warm smile to her face. She kept doggie treats in every room of her home and dispensed them with relish to all canine visitors. She loved her garden and spent many happy hours arranging beautiful bouquets. She was a long-time member of the Town & Country Club, Marin Garden Club and Garden Conservancy; a Sustaining Member of the Junior League and one of the original docents of the De Young Museum Auxiliary.

Kay travelled the world with Bob, among her favorite memories were shopping the souks of Kuwait and Cairo in the 1950’s, and stays at the Mas des Serres, an auberge in St. Paul-deVence that she and Mark discovered. During the 1970s, she lived in Tehran while Bob and Mark were construction managers for a large naval base at Chahbahar on the Straits of Hormuz.

For the past twenty-seven years she continued to live in the Japanese style home she and Bob built in 1970, surrounded by photos, music, memories and her two wonderful and steadfast companions “Ginger” and “Molly”. Her family is forever grateful for the care and loyal dedication of Doy and Carmen Mangilit.

Kay will be remembered for her style, beauty, elegance, femininity, charm, grace and strength. She will be greatly missed by her countless friends; she will continue to live on in their hearts.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 11th at 11AM at St. John’s Church in Ross.
