Love early favorite to win the Heisman

The Las Vegas sports books like Stanford running back Bryce Love.

He is their Heisman Trophy betting favorite in odds released Friday.

Love, a senior who passed on the NFL draft to return to the Cardinal, opened at 5-1 at the Westgate Super Book. He rushed for 2,218 yards with 19 touchdowns and finished runner-up to Baker Mayfield in last season's Heisman race.

Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor is next at 7-1, followed by Alabama quarterbac­k Tua Tagovailoa at 10-1. Georgia quarterbac­k Jake Fromm, Oregon quarterbac­k Justin Herbert and Arizona quarterbac­k Khalil Tate are 14-1.

Alabama is the consensus favorite to win the national championsh­ip at 7-4, followed by Clemson (5-1), Ohio State (5-1) and Georgia (6-1).

NCAA track and field: Stanford’s Sean McGorty won the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:54.81 at the NCAA outdoor championsh­ips in Eugene, Ore. Earlier in the day, Stanford’s Steven Fahy was third in the 3,000 steeplecha­se in 8:34.52. The Cardinal tied for eighth in the team competitio­n with 28 points. Georgia won the title with 52 points. Stanford leads the women’s division with 25 points, with Florida (17) in second.

NFL: Houston Texans safety Andre Hal, 26, has been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer of the blood cells. The team says he received the preliminar­y diagnosis from team physician Dr. James Muntz and has consulted with doctors at Houston’s MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Swimming: Five-time Olympic champion Katie Ledecky has signed with swimwear company TYR in her first endorsemen­t deal since leaving Stanford’s program and turning pro. Ledecky, 21, is competing in Santa Clara this weekend in a Pro Swim Series meet sponsored by TYR. She has broken 14 world records, has won six Olympic medals and has been named World Swimmer of the Year four times.

Motor sports: Kurt Busch won his second NASCAR Cup Series pole of the season for Sunday’s race at Michigan Internatio­nal Speedway, posting a lap of 203.361 mph in his No. 41 Ford. Brad Keselowski was second in qualifying, followed by Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick.

College baseball: Levi Jordan was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Washington beat host Cal State Fullerton 8-5 in its opener of the NCAA Tournament best-of-three super regionals . ... Luke Heimlich limited Minnesota to four hits in seven innings and Trevor Larnach and Adley Rutschman hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning as host Oregon State won 8-1 in its super regional opener.

WNBA: Tiffany Hayes scored 24 points, Angel McCoughtry had 23 points, nine rebounds and six assists and the visiting Atlanta Dream beat the Las Vegas Aces 87-83 . ... Skylar Diggins-Smith scored 10 of her 35 points in the fourth quarter and the Dallas Wings overcame a 13-point deficit to beat the host Indiana Fever 89-83 . ... Brittney Griner scored 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the host Phoenix Mercury defeated the Chicago Sky 96-79.

Obituary: Maria Bueno, who won three Wimbledon singles titles and four at the U.S. Open in the 1950s and 1960s, has died in Sao Paulo, Brazil, after battling cancer. She was 78.
