Legends of the game

-

What a great season for our Golden State Warriors. Back-to-back champions sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James. We are blessed as Bay Area fans watching the likes of Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala. Legends of the game.

Defining beauty standards

Columnist Jonah Goldberg, in “Pageant loses purpose, along with swimsuits” (Insight, June 10), unknowingly reveals his male chauvinism toward women in his statement, “Before I go on, let me confess my shameful secret: I like looking at really beautiful women, including when they wear bikinis.”

So what is Goldberg’s definition of “really beautiful”? Is it limited to those slim, young women in high heels who strut the stage at a Miss America pageant?

Yes, this and other beauty pageants have become anachronisms in 21st century America, but so have conceptions of female beauty being espoused by people like Goldberg. Such beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors and is also defined by intellect and empathy. Those are the qualities that make women — and men — “really beautiful.”

Rethink sports invitations

I never really understood the rationale behind inviting championship sports teams to the White House.

How does throwing a football 70 yards for a touchdown, stuffing a basketball through a hoop or hitting a 98 mph fastball qualify one for such an invitation?

Given the fact that many of these so-called heroes end up in jail for any number of crimes, maybe it’s time to rethink this policy. I can think of numerous citizens who would be deserving of such an honor, like a highway patrol officer who just convinced a jumper to not take his own life, comes to mind.

Herbal remedy to cope

Regarding “It’s high time Trump is right” (Editorial, June 11): The best benefit that could come from President Trump ending the federal prohibition of marijuana is that citizens would have an effective, herbal way to cope with his embarrassing daily rants and threats to democratic institutions — munchies not included.

‘America Alone’

The bullying, name-calling man who sits in the White House has now added a reliable friend and ally, Canada, to his “enemies list.” After leaving the latest G-7 summit, in which Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau struck back at new tariffs being imposed by the U.S., President Trump called him “weak” and “dishonest.”

By alienating our neighbors to the north and south, as well as the rest of the world’s democratic leaders, Trump’s “America First” credo is tragically morphing into “America Alone.”

Reserve the empathy

Regarding “Counter Barr’s intolerance with empathy, not hostility” (Insight, June 3): John McFadden suggests that the left should have empathy for Trump supporters and right-wing people such as Roseanne Barr.

Trump could not be effective without his supporters. His policies exacerbate global warming, hurt poor and vulnerable people, rip families apart at our southern border and are otherwise inhumane. I think that I will reserve my empathy for the victims of Trump and his supporters.

Helmet requirement

Thank you for your piece “Major head injuries ‘public health crisis’ ” ( June 10): In my neighborhood on any given day (but especially on weekend days), there are anywhere from two to eight skateboarders on Bartlett Street. All young adults; all helmetless: dodging traffic, jumping curbs and speed bumps.

It is my hope that the city will require all skateboarders to wear helmets to help protect from concussions and the related serious sideeffects resulting from traumatic brain injury. As the saying goes: “There oughta be a law.” However, unless a law is enforced, it amounts to nothing more than empty words.
