Cahill likely to hit the DL

Trevor Cahill is likely to land on the disabled list Wednesday, manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday, and Chris Bassitt will be back yet again to start in his place.

Cahill’s Achilles tendon discomfort has not abated, according to Melvin, who said, “Cahill is not great. He’s not responding in the fashion we had hoped.”

Bassitt has been recalled three times previously this season, but the only time he got on the mound was Saturday, when he worked seven innings and allowed only one run on three hits and a walk, while striking out six. “If indeed we do this, he deserves another chance, based on how he pitched his last time out,” Melvin said.

More injury news: Starter Brett Anderson (shoulder) is throwing his first bullpen session Wednesday since going on the DL last month; he said his recovery is going so well, plans have been accelerated a bit.

Reliever Ryan Buchter (shoulder), who worked a scoreless inning during a rehab assignment with Class A Stockton on Monday, said he’ll make another appearance with Stockton on Thursday and then is scheduled for four appearances with Triple-A Nashville.

Starter Andrew Triggs

(nerve discomfort, right arm) has a bullpen session Wednesday with two sets of 20 pitches; it’s possible he’ll head on a rehab assignment in the next week.

Dad surprises Piscotty: Mike Piscotty, the father of right fielder Stephen ,hasa friend on the A’s grounds crew and Sunday, he jumped onto the field with the crew between innings, tasked with changing the second-base bag.

“That was great,” head groundskeeper Clay Wood said. “Stephen was so surprised, he big-leagued his dad. His dad was like, ‘Hey! Hey!’ And Stephen finally turned around and said, ‘What are you doing here?’ It was pretty funny. Good to give them a lighthearted moment right now.”

“I was completely caught off guard,” Stephen Piscotty said. “It took me a moment to figure out what was going on. It was cool. And he did great, he blended in really well and he was grinning from ear-to-ear. It was hilarious.”
