Regarding “Separation anxieties” (Editorial, June 18): Nowhere in this editorial discussing the Trump administration’s separation of illegal border-crossing immigrants from their children is this: The president is lying when he claims that this policy was created by the Democrats. Rather, it is yet another cruel action that reflects his anti-immigrant mindset. Please call out the falsehoods being perpetuated by our prevaricator-in-chief, which number in the thousands since he began his term in office.

Immoral actions by GOP

The border child abuse and endangerment is caused by the inhumane policy of the Republican Party removing children by force from their parents who entered the U.S. illegally. The Republican Party has complete control of the U.S. government: president, House and Senate, they alone are responsible. President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions show their brutal inhumanity by justifying this extreme policy as disincentivizing illegal immigration. Why is it that Republicans, claiming to be the party of integrity, and their evangelical supporters are abandoning their principles and condoning the immoral actions of this presidential bully?

Don’t appease Trump

What did we fear when the evildoers were handed the reins of power in Washington? Think about the miserable events on our border with Mexico. Think about the disquieting thought, after Father’s Day, of desperate cries and uncontrollable sobbing of young children as they are ripped away from their moms and dads. This evil should weigh heavily on the conscience of Americans. Snatching kids from their parents is a deliberate President Trump policy. Our heartless president is terrorizing immigrant children and their parents to deter them from seeking refuge. Our racist president is also using helpless children as hostages to force Democrats and moderate Republicans to accede to his disturbing whites-only vision for America. European history has shown us that a demagogue should not be appeased. Appeasement will not stop Trump. It will embolden him to initiate a campaign of even greater evil.

‘America alone’

The southern U.S. border crossers overwhelmingly come from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Unfortunately, the president has continually maligned the Mexican government and its people, eliminating any possibility of joint efforts to stem these undocumented travelers at the southern Mexico border. The “America First” reality is America alone.

Address the hypocrisy

It is time to address the hypocrisy of the United States. In light of our immigration policy, the following inscription on the Statue of Liberty should be removed: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempesttost to me...” Really? So we take children from parents? We build walls? We are clearly full of it.
