Yankees put on show of power in victory

In their first road test against baseball’s top team, the upstart Seattle Mariners were no match for the Yankees’ pitching and power.

Domingo German tossed two-hit ball over a career-high seven innings and Giancarlo Stanton hit one of New York’s four home runs Tuesday night in a 7-2 victory against the visiting Mariners.

“A lot of fun,” Stanton said. “We were clicking on all cylinders.”

Miguel Andujar and Aaron Hicks each belted a two-run shot off Marco Gonzales in the fifth. Hicks homered for the third straight day and finished with three hits from the leadoff spot as the Yankees (48-22) moved a season-best 26 games above .500.

Coming off a four-hit game, Stanton sent a solo drive to straightaw­ay center field in the first. Aaron Judge had an RBI single in the seventh, and rookie phenom Gleyber Torres added his 14th home run in the eighth.

The first two batters reached against German (2-4) on a double and an error. The rookie righthande­r then retired 19 in a row until Nelson Cruz homered in the seventh.

“Dominating, man. Just pounding the zone, blowing it by guys and just showing what he can do,” Stanton said.

After beating Tampa Bay for his first majorleagu­e win last week, German was impressive once again. He struck out nine and walked none.

“I even kicked around sending him back out there for the eighth because he was just so efficient,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “He’s really talented.”

Reds 9, Tigers 5: Joey Votto ended a long homer drought with his third career grand slam, powering Cincinnati to a victory that ended visiting Detroit’s longest winning streak in two years (five games). Cardinals 7, Phillies 6: Matt Carpenter hit a tiebreakin­g solo homer with two out in the ninth, helping St. Louis edge host Philadelph­ia. Carpenter also had a tying two-run double in St. Louis’ four-run seventh. Brewers 3, Pirates 2: Rookie Freddy Peralta allowed two hits in six stellar innings and Jesus Aguilar hammered his 14th home run of the season to lead visiting Milwaukee. Nationals 9, Orioles 7: Trea Turner went 4-for-4 with a homer, Anthony Rendon drove in three runs and host Washington extended its recent domination of Baltimore. Adam Eaton had two hits and two RBIs for the Nationals. Indians 6, White Sox 3: Mike Clevinger struck out 10 and allowed one run in 72⁄3 innings as host Cleveland won. Dodgers 4, Cubs 3;

Cubs 2, Dodgers 1: Albert Almora Jr. hit a game-ending RBI single in the 10th inning, and host Chicago beat Los Angeles to salvage a split of their doublehead­er. Los Angeles began the long day at the iconic ballpark with a victory on pinch-hitter Kyle Farmer’s two-run double in the ninth.

Braves 11, Blue Jays 4: Johan Camargo hit his first career grand slam and went 4-for-5 with five RBIs as visiting Atlanta snapped Toronto’s home winning streak at seven games.

Twins 6, Red Sox 2: Eduardo Escobar hit two go-ahead doubles, a two-run delivery off Chris Sale in the sixth inning and one that sparked a four-run eighth in host Minnesota’s victory.

Rockies 10, Mets 8: Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story and Ian Desmond homered in succession during a six-run third inning, German Marquez pitched effectivel­y for six innings and host Colorado snapped an eight-game home losing streak.

Angels 5, Diamondbac­ks 4: Mike Trout drove in two runs and Kole Calhoun and Ian Kinsler added solo homers as host Los Angeles held on to win.
