3 teens arrested, 1 hurt in shootout with police

A police shooting late Monday night in Union City ended with an injured teen boy and three male juveniles accused of attempted murder after a car stop turned chaotic, authorities said.

Officers initiated the stop because the vehicle the teenagers were driving in was reported stolen, according to information the Union City Police Department released Tuesday afternoon.

One boy suffered a gunshot wound, but is expected to fully

recover, said Lt. Travis Souza, a Union City police spokesman.

Two of the boys are 16 years old and one is 15, and all three were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer and numerous weapons violations, authorities said.

Officers attempted to make a traffic stop at 11:35 p.m. near E Street and Railroad Avenue when an exchange of gunfire rang out between the vehicle’s occupants and several officers,

according to Union City police.

No officers suffered injuries during the exchange of gunfire.

After shots were fired, one suspect allegedly drove the car near the area of Railroad Avenue and Whipple Road, and all three suspects fled the vehicle into surrounding neighborhoods. All three suspects were eventually apprehended.

“We have a big crime scene with multiple locations,” Souza said. “We haven’t even interviewed all the officers yet. When that’s done, we’ll have a better picture of what truly happened.”
