The 49ers secured one of their key protectors of franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on Friday, signing left guard Laken Tomlinson to a threeyear contract extension.

A first- round pick by Detroit in 2015, Tomlinson was acquired by the 49ers on Aug. 31 for a 2019 fifth- round pick. He started the final 15 games of last season.

The 49ers chose not to exercise the fifth- year option this spring on Tomlinson, which would have paid him $ 9.6 million in 2019. But general manager John Lynch at the time stated the team’s interest in signing Tomlinson to an extension. NFL Network reported that Tomlinson’s three- year deal is worth a maximum of $ 18 million with $ 10 million guaranteed.

“Laken is a very talented player who has improved consistently since joining the team one week before last year’s season opener,” Lynch said in a statement. “This offseason, his hard work and dedication paid off as he continued to progress and performed at a high level.

“We were confident we could work out a contract extension with Laken, and we are fired up to get that done before training camp.”

Tomlinson’s extension keeps him under contract through 2021. Joshua Garnett and Jonathan Cooper are top candidates to start for the 49ers at right guard.

49ers rookies and veterans all report to training camp in Santa Clara on July 25.
