_1 Officers injured: A man opened fire on police and firefighters at a San Diego apartment, wounding two officers and sending bullets into nearby units before he was found dead, authorities said Sunday. Police Chief David Nisleit said the two male officers, who were not identified, are expected to recover. Officers had responded to a report of a violent disturbance late Saturday and knocked on the door. They got no response but smelled smoke and called the Fire Department. They forced open the door, and “they were met by gunfire,” Nisleit said. Officers fired back in a gunbattle that sent bullets into nearby condos. Police found the suspect dead, but it was not clear if he died in the shootout or killed himself. _2 Police shooting: Minnesota authorities are investigating after Minneapolis police shot and killed a black man they say was firing a handgun as he walked outside. Some witnesses dispute the police account of the Saturday night shooting, saying the man did not have a gun. Authorities said two calls to 911 reported that a man was firing a handgun into the air and the ground. When officers arrived, they pursued a suspect on foot and the chase “ended in shots being fired,” police said in a statement. Mayor Jacob Frey said the body cameras of the officers involved were “on and activated.” _3 Pump prices: The average price of a regular gallon of gasoline fell 6 cents over the past two weeks to $2.95, according to a survey released Sunday by Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg. That’s the first drop in nearly four months. The lowest average price among the cities surveyed was $2.44 a gallon in Charleston, S.C. The highest was $3.79 in the San Francisco region. _4 Sinkhole death: The state of Arkansas has hired a consultant to evaluate a stretch of river where a kayaker was dragged to his death when a rare sinkhole created a whirlpool. Commissioner of State Lands John Thurston said experts will begin studying the Spring River on Monday. The sinkhole area is now closed to the public. Donald Wright of Searcy, 64, died in the June 9 accident near Saddler Falls. Officials say sinkholes are common in the northern half of Arkansas, where subterranean limestone easily erodes. But it’s unusual to have a sinkhole open a whirlpool in the middle of a stream. _5 King tribute: Boston is broadening its efforts to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King. Mayor Marty Walsh said the city will establish a monument to the civil rights icons on the historic Boston Common. It will also create a “high-tech immersion experience” in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood and develop King-related programming with the Twelfth Baptist Church, where King served as assistant minister in the early 1950s. The projects are the result of community feedback from recent public meetings. The Kings met as students in Boston. Martin Luther King received his doctorate from Boston University, and Coretta Scott King graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music.
