Chapman out a bit longer

CHICAGO — Matt Chapman won’t join the A’s in Detroit, as was the hope, but the team is cautiously optimistic that pinpointing his right hand injury more accurately means he’ll be back soon.

Initially, the injury was thought to be near Chapman’s thumb, which is where he got a cortisone injection last week. Now doctors believe the problem is located just above the wrist, which could mean an injection in that spot will resolve the issue. If so, the A’s third baseman would be back as soon as the next homestand. A cortisone shot was effective in combatting similar righthand soreness this spring.

“If this alleviates it, hopefully we’re on the down side of this thing,” Melvin said.

Chapman will see hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles again Monday.

Starter Daniel Mengden went back to the Bay Area to have team doctors examine his right foot sprain. Melvin said the injury is not related to previous right foot injuries Mengden has had.

Jackson to tie record: As The Chronicle reported Saturday, right-hander Edwin Jackson, 34, will be called up from Triple-A Nashville to start Monday’s game. The 15-year veteran will be playing for his

13th major-league team, tying the record set by reliever Octavio Dotel, himself a former member of the A’s.

“I’m probably the only guy in the clubhouse who’s never met him,” manager Bob Melvin joked. “From what I understand, he’s a terrific gentleman and another great resource for the younger guys . ... I don’t think he’s worn white shoes before, so this is a first for him.”

Reliever Ryan Buchter, out for two months with a left shoulder strain, will come off the DL on Monday in Detroit, so the team will need to make two corresponding moves. Outfielder Nick Martini said Sunday he’s being sent back to Triple-A Nashville; reliever Josh Lucas could be optioned out, or the team could designate Liam Hendriks for assignment.

Brett Anderson, who three four scoreless innings in a rehab start Saturday, is an option to fill in for Mengden on Friday, as is Chris Bassitt if Mengden goes on the DL.
