Yanks’ Torres to DL because of hip strain

-

Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres was placed on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with a strained right hip.

“We’re hoping it’s a short stint,” manager Aaron Boone said, “but we think we’ve got to deal with it this time because there is a small strain there. Hopefully, it won’t be something that it’s too long. Probably take us up to the All-Star break.”

Boone said the club would assess the situation with a day off Thursday before heading to Toronto for the start of an 11game, three-city trip leading into the All-Star Game in Washington.

Torres is hitting .294 with 15 home runs and 42 RBIs in his first 63 major-league games. He had an MRI exam and was not available to talk to reporters.

Boone wasn’t sure how the injury occurred, pointing out that Torres made some “good baserunning plays a couple of nights ago when he moved up on some wild pitches.” Temper, temper: After striking out in the second inning at Miami on Wednesday, Tampa Bay outfielder Carlos Gomez returned to the dugout and took three swings at a cooler. The resulting thuds could be heard throughout the ballpark.

“He squared it up pretty good, it sounded like,” the Marlins’ J.T. Riddle said.

Gomez then punched another cooler, which sent cups flying over the dugout railing.

“When I’m angry, I’m not thinking really well,” Gomez said. “If they fine for me this, I’ve got enough money to pay.”

Gomez said he was upset because he was hit by a pitch during the at-bat, and the umpire blew the call. He was jeered in subsequent at-bats by the crowd of 7,572.
