Alphabet adds Wing and Loon
Alphabet said Wednesday that it is adding two companies to its roster: Loon, which aims to bring internet connections to rural areas, and drone delivery firm Wing.
Both projects were previously part of Alphabet’s X division, where unconventional ideas are tested. They’ll now be included in Alphabet’s Other Bets category, which includes companies like life-sciences firm Verily and urban digital infrastructure startup Sidewalk Labs. Alphabet is the parent company of Google, which accounts for the bulk of its revenues and employees.
Loon uses balloons to provide wireless internet in hard-to-reach places; it helped provide internet service in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. Wing has been testing drone deliveries in Australia and Virginia, with an emphasis — perhaps in a nod to its California roots — on burritos.
