Asians, Pacific Islanders gather to tell their stories
There’s a reason that storytelling events like the Moth and Pop-Up Magazine have become cultural touchstones. But even as most of them seek out diverse speakers, if you’re not white, there’s no sure bet you’ll see somebody who looks like you or has lived a life even a little like yours.
Enter Hella Asian, a first-of-its-kind event that centers on Asian American and Pacific Islander stories.
Organized by the Bay Area chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association, the evening features a wide variety of storytellers, including editors, writers, filmmakers and creative directors from places like California Sunday Magazine, the Center for Investigative Reporting, Hyphen and NBC Bay Area. Proceeds go to support the association’s scholarships and workshops for Asian American and Pacific Islander journalists.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the stories begin at 8.
Hella Asian: 7 p.m. Friday, July 13. $25-$50. Impact Hub, 2323 Broadway, Oakland. www.aajasf.org
