Giants: Pitcher Jeff Samardzija goes on the 10-day disabled list for the third time in 2018.

Twice Jeff Samardzija has rehabbed the shoulder and pectoral injuries that have hounded him since spring training. Twice he returned and could not shake his ailments. So the Giants and the once-durable right-hander will try again.

Samardzija went on the 10day disabled list for the third time in 2018 on Sunday after he lasted four innings in Saturday night’s 4-3 loss and again could not get loose early in the game.

Team orthopedist Dr. Ken Akizuki was to examine Samardzija on Sunday. More diagnostics could be planned.

The disabled-list paperwork says Samardzija has shoulder inflammation, but that can be a symptom of a larger underlying injury. Giants manager Bruce Bochy said nobody has mentioned the possibility of surgery, which suggests the team believes Samardzija can work around the injury.

“He’s gotten cortisone. He’s gotten treatment,” Bochy said. “Some days are better than others. His previous start, I thought, was pretty good. Last night (the shoulder) was cranky.”

Though logic suggests the Giants need to try something different to get Samardzija healthy, they seem to be headed down the same road. The plan calls for rest, a bullpen session to gauge his progress when the team returns from the break, and a start as soon as July 25 in Seattle, the day he is eligible for activation.

The Giants replaced Samardzija with Kelby Tomlinson, who started at second base and went 0-for-2.

More rotation: Bochy said Dereck Rodriguez will start the second-half opener in Oakland on Friday night. Madison Bumgarner will pitch Saturday night and Johnny Cueto on Sunday. After an off day, Andrew Suarez will pitch the first of two games in Seattle.

“Rodriguez hasn’t been out there in a while, and it’s fair to say he’s done a good job,” Bochy said. “We’re also breaking up our lefties and going right-leftright. All those things came to mind.”

This rotation also means the A's will see two starters who did not pitch in the series at AT&T Park.

Briefly: The Giants went into the break with a 31-19 record at AT&T. They totaled 38 home wins last year. … The Giants had won 10 home series and split two since they last lost one, against the Diamondbacks, April 8-10. … Stephen Piscotty’s homer in the sixth was the first hit allowed by Reyes Moronta since June 16 and the first run since June 13. … Chase d’Arnaud hit the Giants’ 91st homer. The A’s have 85 just on the road.
