Kamala Harris, the daughter of immigrants who was born and raised in Oakland and rose to be the junior U.S. senator from California, is working on a memoir that will be released Jan. 8.

“The Truths We Hold: An American Journey” will be published by Penguin Press.

Books by politicians or political aspirants have long been viewed as precursors to campaigns. Harris, who was elected to the Senate in 2016, has been discussed as a possible challenger to President Trump in 2020. “I’m not ruling it out,” she said about the race in June.

The Democrat has been at the forefront of congressional opposition to Trump’s policies, notably standing against his administration’s recent actions on immigration.

Beginning her career in the Alameda County district attorney’s office, Harris was elected the district attorney of San Francisco, then California’s attorney general. She is the second black woman to have been elected to the U.S. Senate.

In a statement, Penguin Press wrote, “By reckoning with the big challenges we face together, drawing on the hardwon wisdom and insight from her own career and the work of those who have most inspired her, Kamala Harris offers in ‘The Truths We Hold’ a master class in problem solving, in crisis management, and leadership in challenging times.

“Through the arc of her own life, on into the great work of our day, she communicates a vision of shared struggle, shared purpose, and shared values. In a book rich in many home truths, not least is that a relatively small number of people work very hard to convince a great many of us that we have less in common than we actually do, but it falls to us to look past them and get on with the good work of living our common truth.”
