A 22-year-old man was fatally shot Wednesday night in El Sobrante, authorities said.

Contra Costa County sheriff ’s deputies responded about 10:45 p.m. to reports of gunfire on the 4800 block of San Pablo Dam Road and found the victim in the driveway of a home with a gunshot wound, said Jimmy Lee, an agency spokesman.

Emergency crews administered CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was not identified pending notification of next of kin.

A man and woman were arrested hours later in connection to the shooting, Lee said.

Anthony Gaines, 22, of Richmond, and Judy Barkas, 57, of El Sobrante, were booked at the Martinez Detention Facility on suspicion of murder and conspiracy.

Both suspects are being held on $2 million bail.

Detectives are still determining an exact motive in the slaying, but have determined that the suspects and the victim were acquaintances and had an ongoing dispute, Lee said.

There were no immediate details on what the dispute was about.

This homicide was the second in El Sobrante this year. On the night of June 30, 28-year-old Mario Ambriz Jr. of Richmond was shot and killed in the parking lot of a bar on the 5200 block of Sobrante Avenue, Lee said. No arrests have been made.
