Carpenter’s day: 3 HRs, 2 doubles

-

St. Louis first baseman Matt Carpenter hit three home runs and two doubles in just six innings Friday, tying the majorleague record for extrabase hits in a game, and the visiting Cardinals hammered the Chicago Cubs 18-5.

Carpenter went 5-for-5 and drove in seven runs. He led off the game with a home run and was pulled after adding a three-run drive in the sixth.

Carpenter became the 14th player with five extra-base hits in a game, and the first to do it for the Cardinals.

“I can’t think outside of tee-ball that I have ever done that, certainly a first for me,” Carpenter said.

Trailing 15-1 after Carpenter’s third homer, the Cubs used three position players to pitch the rest of the way — infielder Tommy La Stella, catcher Victor Caratini and infielder/outfielder Ian Happ.

Rockies 11, Diamondbacks 10: Pinch-hitter Raimel Tapia hit a grand slam in Colorado’s six-run seventh inning, Nolan Arenado had a pair of two-run homers and the Rockies rallied to win in Phoenix.

Dodgers 6, Brewers 4: Manny Machado singled twice and walked twice in his debut with visiting Los Angeles, which used a tie-breaking RBI single by Chris Taylor to beat Milwaukee. Kiké Hernandez added a three-run homer in the ninth for the Dodgers, who have won five of six.

Mariners 3, White Sox 1: Wade LeBlanc and two relievers combined on a five-hitter for host Seattle. Mariners closer Edwin Diaz, pitching for the first time since blowing a save in Tuesday’s All-Star Game, pitched a scoreless ninth for his 37th save.

Astros 3, Angels 1: Dallas Keuchel took a no-hitter into the seventh and finished with 72⁄3 innings of two-hit ball for visiting Houston. Justin Upton broke up Keuchel’s no-hit bid with a two-out single in the seventh.

Braves 8, Nationals 5: Stephen Strasburg allowed six runs in 42⁄3 innings, then got in a spat with fellow Washington pitcher Max Scherzer during the host Nationals’ loss. After Strasburg was pulled in the fifth inning, he got a pat on the back from Scherzer and sat down on the bench. The two then began arguing, then both headed toward the clubhouse. Neither player would discuss the spat after the game.

Mets 7, Yankees 5: Yoenis Cespedes, who had been out since May 13 with a strained right hip flexor, homered in his return as the visitors won the first game of the series between New York teams.

Phillies 11, Padres 5: Carlos Santana homered and drove in four runs and Cesar Hernandez had a two-run double for host Philadelphia, which overcame a four-run first-inning deficit.

Red Sox 1, Tigers 0: Steve Pearce hit an RBI double in the first inning and David Price pitched four-hit ball into the seventh as visiting Boston won for the 13th time in 14 games.

Pirates 12, Reds 1: Sean Rodriguez homered and drove in four runs, Starling Marte hit a grand slam and visiting Pittsburgh extended its winning streak to a season-high seven games.

Blue Jays 8, Orioles 7: Aledmys Diaz singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th as Toronto recovered after blowing a three-run lead in the ninth. Diaz had four hits, including a solo homer, as the Blue Jays improved to 7-1 against Baltimore.

Marlins 6, Rays 5: Derek Dietrich hit two homers, including a three-run shot in the seventh inning that broke a tie, for visiting Miami. Tampa Bay center fielder Kevin Kiermaier left the game with a sore right foot.

Indians 9, Rangers 8: Edwin Encarnacion had an RBI single in the 11th inning to lift visiting Cleveland.

Royals 6, Twins 5: Lucas Duda homered and drove in three runs for host Kansas City.
