Familia trade pursued

Looking to build up their bullpen for a stretch run, the A’s are trying to land Mets reliever Jeurys Familia, multiple sources told The Chronicle late Friday afternoon.

Familia, 28, has a 2.88 ERA and 17 saves, but the A’s are interested in acquiring the right-hander to share set-up duties with Lou Trivino ahead of All-Star closer Blake Treinen. The Mets are talking to multiple teams about Familia; one of New York’s acting general managers, J.P. Ricciardi, was once a special assistant in Oakland’s front office.

Numerous outlets have reported that the Mets are exchanging names with prospective trade partners in an effort to move Familia, who will be a free agent after the season. New York is not expected to want a major-leaguer in exchange. The team, which has the worst record in the National League, is looking to improve its farm system.

Familia has 123 career saves with New York, including a league-leading 51 in 2016, when he was an All-Star.

Oakland’s biggest need is for starting pitching, but vice president of baseball operations Billy Beane said on The Chronicle’s A’s Plus podcast this week that should the team deem the market for starting pitching insufficient, the A’s would focus on building up the bullpen.

Oakland’s relievers have worked 355 innings, fourth most in the league.

Trivino’s apology: Rookie reliever Trivino, who apologized on Twitter earlier in the week for insensitive tweets he sent in 2012, reiterated Friday how sorry he is for the tweets, which have been deleted.

“It was me being a dumb 20-year-old,” Trivino said before Friday’s game. “It isn’t indicative of what I think. I’m disappointed and I’m embarrassed. I know I hurt a lot of people with what I said.”

One tweet, caught via a screengrab, read, “I can’t wait to be a minority so (it’s acceptable) for me to act like a jackass out in public,” and another, “Danica Patrick is a great example of why women should leave certain things to men.”

Briefly: Outfielder Matt Joyce (back) ran and did a tough core workout Friday but he is not yet swinging the bat . ... Double-A Midland catcher Sean Murphy had surgery for a broken hamate in his right wrist; it’s hoped he’ll be back before the end of the season.
